Going to Fridas’s house was always on my bucket list.

We’ve covered Yucutan, Chiapas and just landed in Oaxaca- Puerto Escondido. About 1000 miles in 12 days -

It’s so beautiful to see the landscape and traditions change as we travel through .

Without a doubt so far the highlight has been visiting San Juan Chamula church in Chamula-

A fusion of tradition Mayan ritual and prayer in a catholic space.
The Tsotsil Mayans refused to give up their faith and traditions when the Spanish came in the 1500s , so they agreed to compromise- they would pray in their churches but to their own gods in their own way- syncretism is the name of the faith. The space is sacred- the floor covered in pine needles and 1000s of candles burning, with incense- copal. Men, women & children huddled around their own respective shrines 50+ candles melted to the floor- chanting- sending prayers and incantations for healing.

Absolutely no pics allowed as the Tsotsil people believe if you take a photo of them - you steal a piece of their soul. Which is interesting to learn as a photographer- and resonates. Sometime photography does feel like stealing.
