#InFocus: “In Focus” is our recurring review series where we hunt down and peruse new publications from our community.

This month, we look closely at “Ain’t No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down” by Stacy Kranitz (@stacykranitz), published by Terrible Baby (@terriblebabybooks) and ÉDITIONS IMAGES VEVEY (@imagesvevey_books). Drawing together seventeen years of photographs, archival research, and literary texts, the book traces the complex social history of Appalachia while questioning the role photography plays in shaping how a region and its people are seen across generations.

« Our Dollhouse (Unsere Puppenstube) » (2021 ) by @fransangle

🏠 Francesca Hummler has photographed her younger sister for over thirteen years, developing a practice rooted in photo-therapy that helps her sister build self-confidence, navigate her identity as a young Black girl in a German-American family, and confront insecurities common in adolescence. Centered around a multigenerational dollhouse the sisters furnished together, the work affirms her sister’s rightful place in the family’s lineage despite ignorant objections.

This project is part of the group show « Family Stories » - curated by @gabriela_torres_freyermuth

Beyond thrilled to have been invited by The New York Times (@nytopinion) to make images to illustrate the piece, “Whimsy and Kitsch Built This Powerful Women’s Voting Bloc” by Kristin Kobes Du Mez (@kkdumez).

I spent my teenage years wearing a purity ring and find the connection between American Christianity, gender roles, and politics endlessly fascinating, to say the least. This subject resonates with me, as I often use my camera to explore my relationship and past with Christianity.

Artists: The works of Cordula Diebold (Tübingen) and Francesca Hummler (USA) explore our place in the world. In »Something Like Humility«, Diebold turns her gaze toward landscape, light, and the transient – as a poetic form of self-positioning. In »Our Dollhouse«, Hummler transforms a dollhouse passed down through generations into a symbol of memory, belonging, and migration.

Künstlerinnen: Die Arbeiten von Cordula Diebold (Tübingen) und Francesca Hummler (USA) fragen nach unserem Platz in der Welt. Diebold richtet in »So was wie Demut« den Blick auf Landschaft, Licht und das Vergängliche – als poetische Form der Selbstverortung. #ExhibitionReview: Ana Mendieta was named as one of the inspirations for our current Guest Room open call, “Photography Unbound,” curated in collaboration with @lightworkorg.

We had the privilege of seeing her retrospective, currently on view at @tate Modern in London until January 17, 2027.

Reflecting on what makes Mendieta’s work so compelling, our Program Curator, Francesca Hummler (@fransangle), shares:

“The visceral nature of Mendieta’s work and its self-assured overflow into every medium, from sculpture to performance art, makes it feel as though the artist is standing in the gallery with us. Maybe this is why visitors spoke in hushed tones, as though attending mass, as we navigated a brilliantly curated space.

This reverence allowed the loudest element in the room to be Ana’s core truths: her spiritual beliefs, her role as an educator, her critique of white-dominated second-wave feminism, and her insistence on honoring indigenous traditions and land rights.

Ana was deeply committed to the photographic gesture. As I often advise photographers in our Face-to-Face feedback sessions: it is vital to repeat an artistic gesture until you’ve fully explored and exhausted it.

While the merch shop didn’t have the same splashy display as Tracey Emin’s just one floor up, the showcase reinforces Tate’s defining 2005 strategic pivot and its ongoing commitment to establishing photography as the preeminent visual medium of the 21st century.

Truly one of the best displays I’ve seen at the Tate in a while, featuring rare pieces I’ve never seen anywhere else. Still, I find myself grappling with her posthumous deification, and I wonder about the restriction on documenting her films in the space; would Ana have approved?

Looking back at the “Día de las Madres Pop-Up Exhibition” at Bread & Salt (@breadandsalt_sandiego) alongside other local artists. Those who know me know that my world revolves around my sisters, and I’m so proud to show their portraits! The exhibition reflected on motherhood, care, memory, and the many forms connection can take across families and communities. 🌹

Since moving back to San Diego last fall, I’ve appreciated getting to reconnect with the arts community here. Community exhibitions like this one have become an important part of my practice and the way I think about photography, conversation, and shared space. Thank you to @luisaluisaww and @athenaeummusicandarts for organizing and creating space for artists to come together and share work. by @fransangle

Who represents Queerness?

Four views on proving existence, safe spaces for visibility, and archiving chosen histories. This Pride Month, we highlight photographers who are expanding how queer lives are seen, remembered, and represented: Asafe Ghalib (@asafeghalib), Quetzal Maucci (@quetzalitaa), Niamh Rogers (@niamhrogersphotography), and courtney coles (@kernieflakes).

We are also proud to feature an image from Ghalib’s “Under the Same Sun“ as the header image for our Pride Month open call, inviting LGBTQIA+ artists working with lens-based media to share their work with our global community.
