One moment, it was just another shadow drifting through the blackwater. The next, this tiny Enoploteuthis squid flared into its incredible defensive display—arms spread wide, hooks exposed, transforming itself into something that looked far larger and far more intimidating than it really is. Just a few seconds later, it vanished back into the darkness as quickly as it had appeared. These fleeting encounters are what make blackwater diving so addictive. Possibly the cutest creatures in the Sea of Cortez. 🦭💙 Breeding season is coming to an end at Los Islotes, which means one very important thing: lots and lots of curious little sea lion pups. And they are EVERYTHING. Playful, fearless and endlessly curious — chasing each other through the water, blowing bubbles, nibbling on fins and coming over to investigate the strange bubble-making creatures visiting their home. There are few underwater encounters that bring me this much pure joy. Photography has always been my way of bringing the incredible things I experience underwater back to the surface and sharing a little piece of that world with others. Like a tiny disco ball drifting through an endless black ocean. The rainbow colors of a comb jelly aren’t actually pigments—they’re created as rows of microscopic cilia refract light while beating in perfect synchrony. It’s one of the most mesmerizing light shows in the sea. And despite its delicate appearance, a comb jelly is a surprisingly efficient predator.
