After years of revolution, sacrifice, and fighting to break free from a king, America faced a defining moment: we were one decision away from having another one.

But George Washington made a choice that would help define not only his legacy, but the future of the country. And for one of the most emotional goodbyes in American history.

We find ourselves back where the season started—Fraunces Tavern—but this time, we’re here for closure.

Inside Fraunces Tavern, Washington said an emotional farewell to his officers before eventually surrendering his military power and returning to private life—helping establish a precedent that power in America would not belong to one person.

For the final episode of Historically Correct: New York, we return to where our journey began to tell the story of Washington’s farewell, his decision to walk away from power, and the moment that helped define the American experiment.

We started the season here, and it only felt right to end it here. 🇺🇸🗽

Ever wonder why it’s called Pearl Street? 🦪

The answer goes back to New York’s long history with oysters.

When Henry Hudson sailed into New York Harbor in 1609, the waters surrounding the city were home to vast oyster reefs. Oysters were so abundant that their shells became part of the city itself, used for everything from paving streets to making mortar.

The name Pearl Street dates back to the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam, when part of today’s street was known as Paerlstraat, a name linked to the oyster shells found along the shoreline.

Back then, Pearl Street also roughly followed the edge of Manhattan. As the city grew, landfill extended the shoreline further into the East River toward what is now Water Street.

More than 400 years later, oysters are still part of the story.

Pearl Street OysterFest is on now through September 17th, with food and drink specials at Fraunces Tavern and Lucky Tiger, plus Wolf Hound Oyster Stout pouring at both! taken in Lower Manhattan by @frauncestavern
