Before ‘What We Carry’ became a series of sculptures, it started with research, references and questions Freda was working through.

In the first clip from our conversation with Tireni (@tirzni) Freda talks about some of those starting points and how they developed into the work. by @fredarchives

Each commission with Freda Osayuki Igiogbe begins with a conversation.

From there, the sculptures develop gradually through sketching, material exploration and Freda’s own sculptural process using Vulcan clay.

A limited number of commissions are currently available.

If you’re interested about commissions, get in touch.

We’re excited to present ‘To Lift The Ground That Holds Us,’ an exhibition and a series of workshops exploring what it means to carry culture forward, to inherit, adapt, and reimagine it in our own way.
Through painting, sculpture and participatory practice, we’re thinking about what we hold, what changes, and what we choose to make anew.

Was there one work that became the emotional centre of What We Carry?

In this clip, Freda and Lauren talk about the piece that ended up holding a lot of the exhibition together, and why it became important to both of us in different ways.

Artists You Should Know - @fredarchives

Freda Osayuki Igiogbe is a Nigerian-British multidisciplinary artist whose work explores memory, spirituality, cultural identity, and ancestral heritage.

Working primarily with clay, she creates expressive figurative and mythological forms that blend African cosmologies with Christian symbolism, using texture, repetition, and tactile processes to evoke personal and collective histories.

Her sculptural practice is rooted in storytelling, transforming themes of ritual, diaspora, fear, and remembrance into powerful works that bridge the physical and spiritual worlds.

‘Forming Home with Our Hands’ created a space for everyone to explore what “home” truly means through clay and reflective exercises.

Many beautiful and inspiring conversations were had about the feelings that arise when connecting to home.
This was a way to decolonise our understanding of what home is meant to be, and opened up wider discussion about identity and place.

Many thanks to @fredarchives for co-facilitating the session with me. Also a big thanks to @ikokobrixton for allowing us to use the space and for welcoming us with open arms🧡

Stay tuned for more workshops soon! by @fredarchives

I will be showing/ selling this piece @thegraduateartshow at Art Movement Gallery
163A St John’s Hill, London SW11 1TQ, taking place from June 24 to July 11, 2026.

Earthbound Thought is a piece created through
experimentation with movement, exploring how clay
and metal can be pushed to work together
harmoniously. I made the work during a period of
uncertainty about myself and the direction of my
practice. This sense of instability is reflected in the
figure, which is composed of multiple heads connected
only by wire, linked together like chains. The suspended
and fragmented structure suggests feelings of emotional weight, internal conflict, and the struggle between connection and restraint. By combining the fragility of clay with the strength and tension of metal, I wanted to create a piece that feels both delicate and uneasy, capturing a moment of transition within my practice and personal mindset. by @fredarchives
