During the Civil War, many soldiers traveled vast distances to battle, with large numbers never returning home alive. The ancient practice of embalming, which preserved the body and made it possible to be shipped home, was reinitiated locally following the Battle of Antietam in 1862. Terry Reimer, Director of Research at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, discusses the reintroduction of this practice, the museum building’s haunted reputation and the major renovation of exhibit areas currently taking place.

Williiam O. Lee had a vision.
