«Tick Tock» live at @pipfest 2026 — when DATAROCK was direct support for David Byrne!

Such a pleasure and privilege to finally meet the ever inspiring, relentlessly inquisitive «post modernist» giant, @davidbyrneofficial — admittedly affecting so many of our creative endeavors via both Talking Heads’ songwriting, references, arrangements, production, cover art, music videos & concert film Stop Making Sense, via his film True Stories, his stellar solo albums & amazing stage productions, various collaborations, and insightful publication How Music Works, etc, etc.

«Fa-Fa-Fa» has the most obvious reference to his work of course — quoting Talking Heads’ «Psycho Killer» — but the trick in that specific case (as Byrne confirmed in our conversation) is how «Fa-Fa-Fa» contains a double reference; you see Byrne himself referenced Otis Reading’s «Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)» in «Psycho Killer», so there you go — not only did we reference Byrne’s work, but also how Byrne playfully refers to others himself.

Another example is of course DATAROCK’s «True Stories» (named after his motion picture) where all sentences in the lyrics are full Talking Heads titles — and its music video even took inspiration from parts of Byrne’s red, graphic back projections seen in Stop Making Sense.

DATAROCK got to play «direct support» for his latest marvel of a traveling stage productions at @pipfest — and believe us — if you have the opportunity to see David Byrne live on his current tour, do everything in your power NOT to miss it; we’re talking 13 artists on stage + 35 artists behind the scenes. NOT TO BE MISSED!

An invitation to compose music for a stage adaptation of "The Master and Margarita" took an unexpected turn when @fredriksaroea was also asked to portray Woland, Satan himself, despite having never acted before.

What began as a theater commission ultimately evolved into a cinematic, atmospheric album far removed from both @datarock_official's dance-punk sound and Saroea’s earlier solo work.

We spoke with Fredrik about composing for theater, stepping onto the stage as an actor, transforming the music into a standalone album, and the enduring relevance of "The Master and Margarita."

Nous nous voyons à La Comédie de Reims - Centre Dramatique National le 19 avril! #reims #france

The Master and Margarita • link in bio 🎭

My 4th solo album is out featuring the music I composed for a theatrical adoption of Mikhail Bulgakov’s acclaimed novel at The National Stage [for the Bergen International Festival in 2024] — where I also played the main character of Woland.

The Master and Margarita feature DATAROCK colleague @kjetilmoester on woodwind, the "Norwegian Grammy» winner Stian Balducci aka +plattform on electronics, and guest appearances by the @bit20ensemble’s string quartet from my Rona Diaries & Lucid Dream albums, original DATAROCKer Ketil Mosnes aka @baertur on bass, Ungdomskulen’s @solheimoeyvind on drums, The Megaphonic Thrift’s @richmykle on guitar & Misty Coast’s @linn_frokedal on bass — all wrapped in a stellar mix & master by @markrankin, and this exquisite artwork by the amazing @mvm_magnus!
