As Wisconsin’s first Asian American state legislator, Francesca Hong has proven that real leadership means building power across our communities. Her record isn't just about single-issue representation, it’s about deep solidarity and systemic change that delivers for Black, Southeast Asian, and working-class families across Wisconsin.

Here is why Francesca Hong’s platform matters for all of us:

🔹 Economic Justice & Living Wages: From championing an Economic Bill of Rights to fighting for paid family leave and higher minimum wages, Hong is committed to closing the racial wealth gap and lifting up Black and Brown workers.
🔹 Black Maternal & Reproductive Health: Hong co-authored critical legislation to protect pregnant and postpartum individuals in confinement and continues to fight for bodily autonomy and equitable healthcare for Black birthing parents through the Reproductive Freedom Act.
🔹 Investing in Youth, Not Incarceration: Real safety starts with resources. Hong advocates for fully funded public schools, universal meals, and community-led safety solutions, shifting resources away from the school-to-prison pipeline and hyper-criminalization toward youth mental health and education.
🔹 Cross-Community Solidarity: From passing historic legislation requiring Hmong and Asian American history in public schools to fighting aggressive ICE practices, Hong understands that our liberation is tied together.

Today, we honor the resilience, survival, culture, and leadership of Hmong people.

Hmong communities continue to face violence through deportations that tear families apart and deny our people safety and dignity. Honoring Hmong people means fighting for our communities and organizing for a future where our families can stay together and thrive.

That is why we are calling on our community to support the Southeast Asian Deportation Relief Act (SEADRA).

SEADRA would:
• End deportations for many Southeast Asian refugees
• Restore due process protections
• Keep families together
• Create pathways for stability and dignity

Our people deserve care, safety, and the right to stay home.

Dear Community,

A little over a month ago, a longtime Freedom, Inc. member and youth organizer Janavia Calmese was racially profiled, and forcefully pinned to the ground by Mark Bonds, a Madison police officer. Janavia's cries of “Stop, I’m pregnant”, were met with excessive force during her arrest and hours of solitary confinement without a chance to call her family and let them know what happened to her. Her only crime was walking alone while Black, with a hoodie on.

We are writing to share with our freedom family that Janavia’s baby came into this world much too soon after that incident and is currently fighting for his life.

Our entire staff and membership is devastated and coming together to wrap arms around Janavia and her baby during this time. We are heartbroken over the relentless violence Black women’s bodies endure under patriarchy, capitalism, and white supremacy.

From slavery up to present day, terrorizing Black women and girls remains a key feature of policing. The same violence Sandra Bland, Breonna Taylor, Ma'Khia Bryant, Ta'Kiya Young, and countless others experience, is normalized and rewarded. MPD is not exempt from this pattern – their internal investigation has found no fault with Mark Bond’s actions. And to that we say “SHAME”! Shame on MPD for condoning violence towards Black women and our children.

Join us on Tuesday, JUNE 3rd @ 6PM, for an in-person #HandsOffBlackWomen teach-in at our office. Join us as we fellowship over dinner and learn how we will collectively show up for Janavia and her family. And get justice for all Black Women in Madison who are survivors of police violence.

On March 6th, 2015, Tony Robinson was murdered by killer cop Matt Kenny in Madison, WI. After completing his investigation, then Attorney General Brad Schimmel said he didn't see anything wrong with Kenny's heinous and depraved actions.

10 years later, FAN sat down with Tony's grandma, Sharon Irwin Henry, and aunt, Lature Carter to hear what they think Wisconsin needs from our next Supreme Court Justice, and why Brad Schimmel could never meet those needs.
