Vote NO to agenda item 79! Defend police oversight!

Tuesday, October 20th

Email your alder!

SCRIPT:

Hello,

My name is [your name], and I am a [student, faculty member, alumnus] at UW-Madison. I urge you to vote no on agenda item 79 of the Common Council meeting on October 20, 2026.

In the wake of the police killing of Corey Ruiz as well as the 2024 death of Richard Lee Johnson in police custody, now is not the time to weaken civilian oversight of the police by firing the Independent Monitor. I feel deeply that the City of Madison ought to hold the police accountable for abuses of power that have continued despite community outrage. Instead, our elected officials have shown that they intend to continue siding with the police in these instances.

Students and community members want justice for Corey Ruiz, Richard Lee Johnson, and all victims of police violence. The Office of the Independent Police Monitor should be strengthened rather than weakened.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

People gathered outside of the Wisconsin State Capitol last night to remember Corey Ruiz, who was shot and killed by a Madison police officer last month.

Right as the protest started, police came in and arrested two of the organizers and pepper sprayed the crowd. A 3rd person was arrested later.

After dark, people placed 200 headstones on the Capitol lawn with the names of people murdered by police.

BUILD THE PEOPLE NOT THE JAIL.

Today, We at the Dane County Jail with the Free the 350 Bail Fund getting our people FREE. Help us welcome our people home. Pull up to W. 115 Doty.

Jails don’t make our communities safer. They rip people away from their families, criminalize poverty, and pour money into cages instead of housing, healing, education, and life affirming services.

FREE THEM ALL!

200 headstones representing 200 lives taken by the state. We know there are thousands more.

Each stone represents the life of someone who was loved, someone who had people waiting for them to come home, someone who should still be here. Corey should still be here.

Don’t tell us about a few bad cops. The whole damn system is guilty as hell. We will say Corey’s name, and we will say every name. They don’t get to murder our people in the street and then ask us for peace.

Join us Today, Saturday, August 22nd at 11 AM at the Dane County Jail. We will continue to show up, speak out, and demand justice for every life taken.

All power to the people!# #justiceforcoreyruiz

Today, Freedom, Inc. and Freedom Action Now hosted The People’s Ride Along to demand Justice for Corey Ruiz, Tony Robinson, Quantaze Campbell, Richard Lee Johnson, and all those taken by the state.

We hand delivered caskets to the Mayor’s and the District Attorney’s homes because they have blood on their hands. They have the power to stop this, but they don’t. They are part of the occupation of Black communities and we must continue to show up and demand justice.

Follow us for more actions this week. #JusticeForCorey #CommunityControlPolice

The young people are so amazing.

For day one of the Frontline Organizing School, we got into what organizing really means, how we move people from where they are to collective action, and why organized people have the power to change conditions.

We also talked principled struggle, how we disagree, challenge each other, and work through contradictions without abandoning the struggle.

“All Power to the People. All Love to Our Children.”

TWO YEARS since FITCHBURG POLICE took Kevin from us. They entered his home after Kevin called 911 for help, shot him three times less than five minutes after busting down the apartment door. Then they prevented SSM Health from calling his family, so Kevin was alone for three days before he died. Kevin deserves to be remembered!

It’s coming up on two years since Fitchburg PD took Kevin from us. Two weeks ago we were starkly reminded that the work never ends, and there is still a long road ahead of us. But the outpouring of community support and love gives us hope. ❤️ Keep up the good work everyone!
