All the dogs feel the shift and they have been hanging close by our sides as if they know. Dogs will never cease to amaze me how in tune they can be without stopping to ask any questions or even pause. I struggle to share a photo of Chester this morning because he is and looks very tired, and I want him to be remembered as a soul of such strength and determination, nothing less. Right now he is laying comfortably in his run, another fluffy pile of bedding laid fresh for him this morning. All of the messages that have been left for him are wrapping this time in such love and I cant help but smile knowing how many hearts he has touched from being himself. All our your words are so touching and meaningful and caring, thank you so much. I keep telling him 'look at what you helped create' so he knows what he's taught us and shown us has & will continue to help many others who were abandoned like he once was. by @freetobevt

We received results of Chester's bloodwork this afternoon and we have very unfortunate news to share. Chester's body is no longer working for him as it has for so many years. There are multiple markers present on his bloodwork that indicate his organs are struggling to function properly, and a serious possibility of active kidney failure. Saturday evening Chester had stopped eating, no improvement in symptoms, and as of recently his breathing has become slowed. Morgan and I have been discussing at length best case scenario and worst case, then my conversation with the vet today discussing Chester's medical state, prognosis, progression, and no longterm solutions that would be appropriate for him. Chester for the past 3 years has fought everything that has come his way with a fierce determination, but now, we see he's tired. We have come to the difficult decision that the most loving thing we can do for him, is help him find eternal comfort. We have arranged for tomorrow a peace filled transition in his home, surrounded by all the new & old friends he's made and his best friend Phil. Remembering the day Chester arrived 4 1/2 years ago, seeing all he has built with us, everything about him is embedded in all that we are.

If you'd like to give a message or love to Chester, I will read all of them to him tomorrow during the day. He is nestled in a very large pillow of fluffy bedding right now tucked into his barn, Phil as always, by his side. by @freetobevt

I'm sorry is has taken me so long to post, we just don't know what's going on. Thursday night Chester went to bed normally but yesterday morning when we were getting everyone out for the day Chester was acting very off. He is normally talkative and energetic, but yesterday morning he was not. Throughout the day he had been concerningly lethargic and tired, little interest in water but did eat somewhat normally. His legs and feet are also more swollen - a lot. Nothing was improving ,and we brought him into the vet for an emergency appointment. We ran a blood panel, joint tap to both hocks, and began on an antibiotic. Today so far has been the same as yesterday. Unfortunately I don't have much more to update on until the tests come back, which should be early next week, for the blood panel at least. To be as strong as he can be Chester needs to be near Phil and moving him anywhere else, without absolute necessity, would not be good for him. If you've been with us for a while you know how incredibly close their bond is, and Phil has been right by his side in their quiet, comfortable barn. Today he has eaten most, droppings normal, encouraging hydration & providing electrolytes but still very tired. Morgan is also out of town today (& returning tomorrow) and it's just me, and it has been a heavy day. The sample from the joint tap is being sent out for a more advanced testing, which we may not hear back until later this upcoming week. Chester is one of our first ducks and helped build absolutely everything our sanctuary is. Please keep him in your thoughts if you can. Chester has fought through so much already.

Another reason they might be so happy is because of now having other duck friends! Plus our gentle turkey Sally, aka Auntie Sally. The farm camp where they were housed them living amongst chickens and no other ducks, and being very social creatures, having other ducks around can greatly boost their emotional wellbeing. Needless to say, they came to the right place ❤️.

It's not often turkeys are allowed to age gracefully, living days exactly how they choose to. This time of the year really weighs heavy knowing so many deserving animals by the millions just like Greg won't ever get to experience what life can be like. What life should be like. We are honored to be able to share this world & sanctuary with someone like Greg and the quiet, steady strength that follows his entire being.
