Paul Macharia’s work in progress looks so cool even at this unfinished stage!

It’s fun to peek behind the artistic curtain and see the way that Paul develops a realistic final piece from the loose, painterly areas of color you can see in this photo. We can’t wait to see the final painting!

Isa Pavon-Ortiz, an artist in our Fresh Eye Arts program, gained a new fan today: Governor Walz!

Isa met Governor Walz during a visit to the Latine Heritage Month Group Exhibition at Comunidades Latinas Unidas en Servicio (@cluesofficial). Isa has a painting in the show, which the Governor took a moment to admire.

"All of us stand together as neighbors," Governor Walz said afterward. "The Minnesota that we love and care about comes out of the art, it comes out of the stories, it comes out of the hard work."

Thank you @mngovernor for taking the time to honor Latine Heritage Month and this talented community of artists!

🌟Dede Decker: Staff Pick🌟

Fresh Eye's Gallery Coordinator @fresheyegallery eventually chose this piece, but it was tough.

"Not sure if I can really pick a favorite!! All of Dede's work brings me so much joy, especially since she shares my love for animals. I went with this piece because I love the irregular borders, muted color palette, and pops of bright yellow and orange."

See this piece and 19(!!) others in the gallery, then tell us which one is your favorite! by @fresheyearts

This summer we were hosts to artist in residence Nina Martine Robinson! Nina is a textile artist who has been involved with Fresh Eye Arts & Gallery in several ways since first connecting through the Eye to Eye exhibition in 2022 where she collaborated with Lynda Mullan. Nina participated in Eye to Eye again in 2023 with Becca Seevers, then went on to curate an exhibition at the gallery in 2024, PATHWAYS, which featured artists Lynda Mullan, Kelly Pals, and Lena Osman from the St. Paul studio. She has also volunteered for Fresh Eye art parties, open houses, workshops, studio tours, and more.

About her work, Nina says “The focus of my work in recent years has been human neurocomplexity as seen through the lens of a late diagnosed, cis-gender female on the autism spectrum. My new body of work explores the phenomenon of masking in autistic women. Utilizing discarded clothing, my artistic process begins by deconstructing these discarded garments. I then use a fabric collage technique to reassemble the clothing components into large geometric flat forms. The forms are intuitively stitched together resulting in a 3-dimensional soft sculpture or “mask.” Texture, movement and depth are achieved through repetitive stitching and manipulation of the structure.”

Nina completed her initial 6-week residency and has decided to stay on working alongside artists once a week in the St. Paul studio! Thank you for everything Nina! ❤️❤️❤️

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Image descriptions in alt text. Nina stands smiling in the St. Paul studio with her sculptures (one orange and one white) on the left side on a table. Below is red text on a white wavy shape that reads “Artist Residency with Nina Martine Robinson” by @fresheyearts
