Island trips are always my favourite. There’s something so satisfying about being able to explore a place right up to its edge. We just spent a long weekend on @trescoisland for beach walks, bike rides, sea swims, lobster lunches, garden exploring and even hanging out with some red squirrels. Apparently one of them is pretty domesticated and her name is Desmerelda!

How do we connect when the world is designed to keep us distracted? 📱 This week on Character Study I’m talking to Jem Calder: author of I Want You to Be Happy, a novel about two people trying to fall in love while everything around them is engineered to pull them apart. We talk about why he’d rather write fiction than a memoir, why a good line about phones can quickly curdle into cliché and how his writing career started with Sally Rooney emailing him about the first story he’d ever finished.

Freya Bromley is a writer living in London. Her work explores love, loss and the restorative power of nature.

Freya’s first book The Tidal Year was shortlisted for the Nero Book Awards 2023. She recently released her debut novel A Real Piece of Work. She’s also the host of Character Study, a podcast that explores how creativity transforms artist’s lives.

If anyone can beat Shakespeare with their prose, it’s got to be @sufiyaansalam! 👑 This week on Character Study I speak to the novelist and BAFTA-nominated screenwriter whose debut Wimmy Road Boyz follows three British-Pakistani boys across one wild night on Manchester’s Curry Mile. We talk about writing that sounds like Shakespeare and Jay-Z in the same breath, why he’ll say the dumb idea out loud just in case it’s brilliant and writing the specific details that make a movie.

We caught up with Freya Bromley ahead of the launch for her debut novel, A Real Piece of Work, at the shop last month! ⭐️
