🌾 We have 10,000 seedlings from @thewisehands that need planting, and we want your help! Join us as we restore native grasses in coastal upland habitat at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve. This restoration project is funded by the Tampa Bay Estuary Program's Bay Mini-Grant with funds matched by the @stpeteparksrec.

Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is located within the Tampa Bay watershed. The water that runs through our urban landscape drains into Lake Maggiore, flows into Salt Creek, then into Tampa Bay, bringing excess nutrients and pollution along with it. From 2024 to 2025, Tampa Bay Estuary Program's Tampa Bay Restoration Fund in collaboration with Southwest Florida Water Management District and the City of St. Petersburg revitalized 30 acres of wetland and upland habitat. This planting project will expand the footprint of this wetland corridor by connecting surrounding upland areas, providing habitat for biodiversity, and improving water quality from stormwater runoff.

📅 Date: Saturday, October 17
⏰ Time: 7:30 AM – 12:00 PM
🎟️ Registration link in bio

✅ What to bring:
• Closed-toe shoes
• Water bottle
• Gloves (recommended)
• Sun protection (hat, sunscreen)
• All necessary tools will be provided by City Staff. by @friendsofboydhill

Boyd Hill is home to the largest remaining population of gopher tortoises in southern Pinellas County and Jeff Goessling, Associate Professor of Biology at Eckerd College, studies the tortoises that call the Preserve home, learning more about their social dynamics, population size, and overall health of the population.

Join us for an evening at @beechbucha to learn about Florida’s keystone species, and what we can learn by studying a species found right in our backyard.

6pm – 7pm: Meet animal ambassador Mike the gopher tortoise, and chat one-on-one with Dr. Goessling.

7pm – 8pm: Presentation followed by a Q&A by @friendsofboydhill

🐢VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Heinrich Ecological Services is looking for volunteers to assist with gopher tortoise burrow surveys being conducted October through November in the preserve’s uplands.

This survey will provide data for new distribution maps, updated estimate of population size, and tortoise population density in each section of the Preserve. This information will be used by City staff to assess current habitat management strategies and inform future efforts related to this species.

Here’s how to apply:
1. Complete the Boyd Hill Volunteer Application (link in bio) as a General Volunteer and select Wildlife Research.
2. Complete background check (link in bio) and send to bablackf@stpete.org. SS# is not required, but will make the background check faster.
3. Background check will be sent to City HR (7-10 days once submitted)
4. A welcome email will be sent to you once your background check has been completed
5. Complete the account registration where information and schedule will be listed.

This opportunity is for adults only, no minors will be accepted. by @friendsofboydhill
