Getting to model the androgynous version of this creation at Prince’s 10th Celebrat10n in June was one of the highlights of my summer! My deepest of gratitude to @shimmerglitz13 and @mplsgov for providing the opportunity for me to showcase my talent as well myself (designer turn model for the day) to our beautiful city.

BEYOND grateful!! My garment inspired by @prince song “Sometimes it snows in April” is a featured window display at @daytonsproject on Nicollet Mall.

It was initially showcased @officialpaisleypark during @nataliemorrowmn @blackfashionweekmn Design of Time 2022 fashion show. Then revitalized at 2022 @grantwcreative Fashionapolis followed by 2026
Prince 10 Years Celebrat10n. Now the updated version is a window display in association with @shimmerglitz13 Purple Ones Fashion Show & @mplsgov

“When I get marry one day, you’re making my dress,” Lily

Words I thought at the time were simply playful jokes between two high school friends. Fast forward a little over 16 years, standing firm on her words, she chose me to be a part of her special day in the most meaningful way possible. A full circle moment. 4 months since the wedding and I still am honored & thankful to have had the incredible opportunity to bring to life what was once an amusing idea in high school to fruition.

My philosophy as a designer as well as my objective is not necessarily to create beautiful garments, so to speak, but rather to amplify the beauty my clients, in this case my dearest friend Lily, already possessed.

Nymphaeaceae, commonly known as water lilies, was my main source of inspiration not only because it’s a play on her name, but it symbolizes purity, tranquility, enlightenment and beauty, which are all qualities she effortlessly possesses. Another source inspiration was Sun glitter, in regard to the fabric choice. Sun glitter is a the sparkling or shimmering effect caused by the sunlight reflecting of the surface of water.

The silhouette: An empire waist with godets inserted between the princess seams.

Fabric content
• 3 yards Luminous Polyester Mikado - off white- from @moodfabrics
• 45 yards tule godets. One panel consists of 16 layers, a representation of 16 years of friendship.
• 144 hand-stitched satin ribbon flower bows rhinestones appliqué.
• 4 yards glitter tulle for the veil

“Dream big, stay positive, work hard, and enjoy the journey” Urijah Faber

@emilyjlaing this was such a fun project and a 1st for me deconstructing a wedding dress & turning it into a high waisted exaggerated wide leg culotte trousers. Thank you for trusting me with such a special and meaningful dress as well for the opportunity 🙏🏾🙌🏾 (can’t wait to start on the top half 🤗🤗)
