What if artificial intelligence could help personalize a Soldier’s education throughout their entire career?

At AUSA, I sat down with Major General Trevor Bredenkamp, President of Army University, and Colonel Bobby Sickler, Director of the Center for Army Learning Innovation, to discuss what the future of Army education could look like.

Think about how algorithms recommend content based on our interests and previous experiences. What if a similar approach could help Soldiers identify learning opportunities throughout their careers?

We discussed the possibility of connecting the three domains of Army learning: institutional education, operational experience, and self-development.

Imagine a system that could build on what Soldiers learn in the schoolhouse, experience in their units, and study independently, helping them identify opportunities to continue developing throughout their careers.

Whether someone serves four years or twenty, it’s an interesting possibility for the future of professional military education.

Thanks to MANTECH and AUSA for making these conversations possible.

What Makes an Idea Resonate?

During AUSA, Sarah Blake Morgan sat down with me and Alex Morrow of MOPs & MOEs to talk about what we’ve learned about creating content that resonates with people.

Alex spends a lot of time thinking about how to take complex ideas and distill them into a few words that stick with people.

For me, it’s a little different. I create the content I want to consume. Whether it’s a book I’m curious about, a conversation I want to have, or something I’m wrestling with personally in my Sunday Email, I’m usually trying to work through something myself.

Two different approaches to creating content, but both rooted in curiosity and a desire to share ideas worth thinking about.

Looking forward to sharing this special crossover episode on From the Green Notebook soon!

Thanks again to MANTECH and @ausaorg for making these conversations possible.

Culture Above All Else.

During our conversation at AUSA, Colonel Adam Armstrong, commander of the 75th Ranger Regiment, and Command Sergeant Major Joseph Lachnit, the Regimental Sergeant Major, talked about the importance of maintaining a culture built on accountability, caring for people, and readiness.

An 18-year-old Ranger going through RASP is held to the same physical standards as the Regiment’s senior leaders. Those standards are part of what makes the culture strong.

But even great cultures can drift. Standards slip, complacency sets in, and organizations slowly lose the things that made them successful in the first place.

The command team emphasized that as warfare changes and new technologies emerge, the Regiment’s ability to adapt will depend on maintaining that culture.

It’s a good reminder that building a strong culture is one thing. Maintaining it requires constant attention from leaders at every level.

A big thank you to MANTECH and AUSA for making these conversations possible and giving us the opportunity to share leadership lessons from across the Army.

What books have shaped your approach to leadership?

During our conversation at AUSA, I asked Major General VanAntwerp, commanding general of the 25th Infantry Division, about the books he frequently recommends to soldiers and leaders.

He shared two:

📚 The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle, which helped shape his leadership philosophy around developing talent through passion, deep practice, and coaching.

📚 Tribe by Sebastian Junger, which explores the importance of belonging and what brings people together.

I particularly liked his observation about two things that define a tribe: the willingness to share food and defend each other.

Hard to find a better description of what it means to be part of a military unit.

Thanks to MANTECH and @ausaorg AUSA for making these conversations possible.

After a busy week at AUSA, it was great to decompress with the Army Golden Knights!

I was really impressed by the NCOs on the team. They were incredibly passionate about what they do, professional in every aspect of their work, and just genuinely having a good time.

I love being around people who take their jobs seriously but don’t take themselves too seriously. These guys were a great example of that.

Couldn’t think of a better way to wrap up the week!

What does it take to be the best?

Sarah Blake Morgan caught up with the winners of the Best Squad Competition from the 75th Ranger Regiment at #AUSA2026.

What stood out wasn’t just their accomplishments, but their humility and genuine gratitude for the opportunity to represent the Regiment.

A great reminder that excellence and humility can go hand in hand.

The impact of a great leader can last a lifetime.

During our conversation at #AUSA2026, CSM Joseph Lachnit, Regimental Sergeant Major of the 75th Ranger Regiment, shared something he noticed about his predecessors:

They all had one thing in common. They all had a great first squad leader.

He reflected on the squad leader who shaped him as a young Ranger, someone whose lessons and habits he still carries with him today.

It’s a powerful reminder that leadership development doesn’t begin when someone becomes a senior NCO or commander. It begins at the team and squad level.

And sometimes, the influence of a great squad leader can be felt decades later.

Simple advice. Hard to put into practice.

"Be present when you're present."

During our conversation at #AUSA2026, Maj. Gen. Jeffrey VanAntwerp, commanding general of the 25th Infantry Division, shared some advice about balancing the demands of leadership with family life.

When you're at work, be all in. When you're home, give your family that same attention.

As he points out, our spouses and kids are usually the first to recognize when we're physically there but mentally somewhere else.

It's a good reminder that being present isn't just about where we are. It's about where our attention is.

Another great conversation from Field Notes from the Floor, presented by MANTECH.

What if you and your partner are playing by completely different rules?

Your attachment style is essentially a subconscious set of rules you’ve learned about love.

It shapes how you communicate, what you need from other people, how you set boundaries, and what you expect relationships to look like.

Thais Gibson gave me a great analogy: Two people with different attachment styles can be like sitting down to play a board game where one person has the rules for Monopoly and the other has the rules for Scrabble.

Both people may genuinely want the relationship to work. But they’re operating from completely different rules.

And that creates friction.

Thais Gibson explains how understanding those hidden rules can help us better understand ourselves and the people closest to us.

Two books on my current reading list that both come out October 20:

📘 The Strategist: How to Think About War and Politics by Eliot A. Cohen

Cohen takes on one of those words we use all the time but rarely stop to define: strategy. The book explores how leaders connect military action to political objectives, why even experienced strategists get things wrong, and what effective strategic thinking looks like in an era of changing warfare and renewed great-power competition.

📗 The Chip Age: How Semiconductors Became the World’s Most Powerful Resource by Rakesh Kumar

We rarely think about the tiny chips powering our phones, cars, weapons, AI, and nearly everything else in modern life. Kumar explains how semiconductors work, how the global chip industry developed, and why control over their production has become an increasingly important question of economics, national security, and geopolitics.

Two very different books, but both are ultimately about power: how nations wield it, what they depend on to maintain it, and how those dynamics are changing.

Both release in the U.S. on October 20, 2026.
