Rules in Flux: Dialogue and Open Game Library

Rules in Flux is a dialogue developed as part of the Balay da Judge Writer and Artist Residency Program. The fellows hope to converse with the audience on how gameplay factors into critical thinking and decision-making. Through sharing their process, they pose the question: “How can games help us respond to the crises of the present?”

After the talk, there will be a selection of games for attendees to play and engage with.

🎮 WELCOME TO BALAY DA JUDGE

The Alfredo F. Tadiar Library is pleased to welcome Juris Go, Franco Brobio, Lyra Garcellano, and Nissie Arcega of Loopy Engine as our artists-in-residence for the Balay da Judge Residency Program, happening September 16–30, 2026.

@loopy.engine functions as a laboratory for playing and dissecting games. They explore how play can create discursive spaces and help us imagine speculative futures through game narratives and mechanics. During their residency, the group will be working on a game about how communities nourish one another, alongside a publication documenting and reflecting on that process.

Joining us are four artists and cultural workers whose practices move across comics, painting, curation, cultural work, game-making, writing, installation, and other forms of play:

@gojuris is the creator of Janjan Comics, a web-series exploring labor, politics, and everyday life.

@frunkkun is a curator and cultural worker whose projects engage with queer identity and play as a discursive and artistic medium.

@galacticleelee is a visual artist whose practice examines economic and social systems through painting, installation, moving images, comics, writing, and, more recently, board game development.

@antioedipus3000 is an award-winning game maker interested in the ways we engage with our worlds and each other through play.

Together, they form Loopy Engine: a space for asking what games can do, what play can make possible, and how we might use both to think about the worlds we inhabit and the worlds we could build.

We’re excited to have them at the Library and in La Union, and we invite our community to follow along as their residency unfolds. 🌀

First visited Casa San Miguel in 2024 to visit William after a marathon in Subic. Last year, Ryan roped me into helping with Zambulat, because he needed someone who could make a floor plan for the exhibition. Ended up staying for more than that, eventually working as assistant curator for the show.

Distant Diaries is a conversation across time between us and our younger selves.

Distant Diaries is like finding an old diary tucked under the mattress from the bed of your childhood bedroom. You flip through the pages and find yourself reaching from across time.

You remember scribbling and drawing your heart away in its pages. You get to know your younger self again with much kinder and wiser eyes.

Featured Writer: Franco Brobio

Franco Brobio is a cultural worker and organizer from Quezon City. His practice has been largely with the Concerned Artists of the Philippines, exploring collective work as a framework for artistic production, and art as a vehicle for political action. Besides this, he
has been involved with projects that deal with queer identity, and play as medium for
artistic expression.

They say dominance and power are the grammar of masculinity, but we’re here to rewrite the script.

In their latest exhibition, curated by @frunkkun titled Roughhouse, @tokwap and @hubineer wrestle with the contradictions of the male figure. It’s a study of the conditioned body, the queer experience, and the art of rolling with the punches, until you can find the exit.

Don’t just watch the fight, question the arena.

This duo exhibition will be up at @thumbnailgalleryph until the 29th of May, 2026. Gallery hours are Tuesdays-Fridays, 1-6PM.
