counter-cartographies: research-in-progess

Casa San Miguel’s Art Luzon exhibition is a research-in-progress work anchored in the layered histories of Zambales. It features the 1902 US edition of the 1875 Carta General del Archipiélago Filipino, the most detailed map of the Philippine territories during the Spanish colonial period, reproduced for the purposes of American colonization. Against the cartographic imagination of empire, the exhibition brings together works of artists Elmer Borlongan, Carlo Gabuco , Mia Casal, William Matawaran and Eunice Sanchez, foregrounding the oral histories of the people of the province. These are placed in conversation with archival materials from Casa San Miguel, drawn from its 3 decades of stewardship within and alongside its community, as well as news clippings by local journalist Joanna Aglibot, whose reportage features the lives of the Zambales fisherfolks and their every journey into disputed waters.

Rules in Flux: Dialogue and Open Game Library

Rules in Flux is a dialogue developed as part of the Balay da Judge Writer and Artist Residency Program. The fellows hope to converse with the audience on how gameplay factors into critical thinking and decision-making. Through sharing their process, they pose the question: “How can games help us respond to the crises of the present?”

After the talk, there will be a selection of games for attendees to play and engage with.

🎮 WELCOME TO BALAY DA JUDGE

The Alfredo F. Tadiar Library is pleased to welcome Juris Go, Franco Brobio, Lyra Garcellano, and Nissie Arcega of Loopy Engine as our artists-in-residence for the Balay da Judge Residency Program, happening September 16–30, 2026.

@loopy.engine functions as a laboratory for playing and dissecting games. They explore how play can create discursive spaces and help us imagine speculative futures through game narratives and mechanics. During their residency, the group will be working on a game about how communities nourish one another, alongside a publication documenting and reflecting on that process.

Joining us are four artists and cultural workers whose practices move across comics, painting, curation, cultural work, game-making, writing, installation, and other forms of play:

@gojuris is the creator of Janjan Comics, a web-series exploring labor, politics, and everyday life.

@frunkkun is a curator and cultural worker whose projects engage with queer identity and play as a discursive and artistic medium.

@galacticleelee is a visual artist whose practice examines economic and social systems through painting, installation, moving images, comics, writing, and, more recently, board game development.

@antioedipus3000 is an award-winning game maker interested in the ways we engage with our worlds and each other through play.

Together, they form Loopy Engine: a space for asking what games can do, what play can make possible, and how we might use both to think about the worlds we inhabit and the worlds we could build.

We’re excited to have them at the Library and in La Union, and we invite our community to follow along as their residency unfolds. 🌀

It was such a joy to lead the first day of workshops for @parasite.hk’s Workshops for Arts Professionals this summer ☀️

We started the morning with a Monday Chatroom session, getting to know the participants and their positions on art and tech today. The afternoon session focused more on identifying challenges and areas for growth in our fields, and devising possible solutions to address them. I shared numerous projects from Web3, including (and especially) ones that failed, as case studies for how we might intervene.

Thank you again to the entire Para Site team, and especially to @lookstefan and @yuenyukl, who nudged me to look back at my learnings from Web3. It is my time building and learning and curating in Web3 that taught me how much value there is in embodied research, and I appreciated the opportunity to look back at projects and spaces that I have held close to me, even if they did cease.

I look forward to seeing how you all continue to build 🧚

The 9th edition of our Workshops for Arts Professionals runs alongside the International Conference,
‘Unsubscribe All!’! This year, we’re diving into where contemporary art meets technology - beyond inevitability narratives, towards alternative
methodologies for artistic production, collaboration, and knowledge exchange.
Rather than treating tech as a ‘black box’, we approach it as socially embedded infrastructure shaping our environments, languages, and communities. With a regional focus on Asia-Pacific, the programme tackles resource sharing, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and equitable access.

June is typically the start of monsoon season, so to pick Bonnie Bailey’s “Ever After”, one of the most iconic songs of the summer, was an interesting choice. Instead of embodying the heartbeat of summer, this song was chosen because of its significance to Ginoe and his partner, Reenon, who describes choosing the song as almost becoming like a fresh drink of water.

By making Damgo Coffee Shop a space that felt more lived-in and almost like an extension of the comfort of home – a cup of coffee, music you love, and the people you care about most- the inspiration for the art was sparked from a place of deep intimacy.

So grateful for the opportunity to write this piece and dive into the intimacy of the afters. 🤍

You can read the rest of my piece about Foreverafters at @thriveartprojects
