Once a Moc, always a Moc!

This week’s Alumni and Friends gathering in Boston brought together Mocs from multiple generations, with alumni spanning the 1970s through the Class of 2026. It was an evening filled with wonderful conversation, reconnections and new memories.

For the next installment of our Alumni Success Series, we are featuring Kim Downs ’95 and Morgan Word ’24, MBA '26.

Their paths first crossed through Delta Sigma Pi, the business fraternity both joined as Florida Southern students. Downs, a graduate of the School of Business, had returned to campus to speak with members about her career in health care and quality improvement. Word was among the students who connected with her that day.

After gaining an internship with Downs' team at Watson Clinic, her internship eventually developed into a full-time position, which she now holds as a Contracting & QI/VBS Associate.

Yesterday, the CEO100 Lecture Series welcomed Florida Southern College alumnus and United Franchise Group CEO Ray Titus ’85 to the George W. Jenkins Field House.

The CEO100 Lecture Series brings business leaders and accomplished professionals to campus to share their experiences, insights and perspectives with the next generation of leaders. Through these conversations, students have the opportunity to learn beyond the classroom and gain a closer look at the experiences and lessons that shape successful careers.

For the next installment of our Alumni Success Series, we're featuring Derek Wallace ’14.

When Derek Wallace arrived at Florida Southern College, he knew he wanted to build a career in music. What he didn’t know then was that the lessons he learned as a music management student would eventually lead him to hold an impactful role in nonprofit leadership and fundraising.

Wallace now serves as Vice President of Development at Big Brothers Big Sisters Miami, where he leads fundraising efforts to ensure one-to-one mentoring remains accessible to young people and their families.

“I loved fundraising to make music accessible across our community and to support working artists, and I loved seeing music’s impact on young people just as much,” Wallace said. “Now, getting to work with the Littles at Big Brothers Big Sisters and help inspire the next generation of musicians and leaders brings me so much joy.”

Last night I had the pleasure of speaking with former Florida Southern College baseball standout Todd Taylor.

Todd transferred to Southern after playing his freshman season at South Florida State College. During his three seasons at Southern, Taylor batted .356 with 35 home runs, 185 RBI and a .643 slugging percentage.

Taylor earned 2nd Team All-American honors in 1991 and 1st Team accolades in 1992. He was 1st Team All-South Region and 1st Team All-SSC during each of his three seasons as a Moc.

During the summer of 1991, Taylor was a member of the USA Baseball team that competed in the Pan-Am Games. Taylor had three hits, including a homer, as USA downed Dominican Republic in the Bronze Medal game.

Following his senior season, Taylor was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 15th round of the 1992 draft. taken in Florida Southern College by @fsc_alumni

Congratulations to alumnus Sean Mattson ’22, MBA ’24 on being named a recipient of the Long Island Business News Emerging Leaders Under 30 Award!

The honor recognizes young professionals who are making a meaningful impact in their careers and communities. For Mattson, the award represents years of dedication, resilience and a passion for serving others. After surviving a stroke and undergoing a heart procedure at just 23 years old, Mattson's journey is also marked by extraordinary perseverance.

Continuing with our Alumni Success Series, from Florida Southern to the biggest stage in sports broadcasting, Steph Jannetta '15 is helping bring ESPN's NFL coverage to millions of fans as a Production Coordinator for Sunday NFL Countdown, Monday Night Countdown, and NFL Live.

Along the way, she's earned two Emmy Awards and helped produce ESPN's first-ever Super Bowl broadcast. Her journey started right here on campus, with a willingness to take risks, build connections, and chase every opportunity.
