I can still hear the jingle of his keys.

Dean Szabo carried an enormous ring of keys and a radio that crackled with static as he walked across the Florida Southern College campus. If you were a student then, you probably remember both.

But what I remember most is the man.

Dean Szabo was Dean of Men when I arrived in 1982 and later served as Dean of Students until 1990. He was my Dean, and I had no idea how deeply he would shape the person I would become.

He was firm, no nonsense, and not particularly interested in excuses. But he was also compassionate and kind.

He listened. He cared deeply about the College and the students entrusted to him. He wanted us to succeed in college and in life. He saw possibilities in us that we couldn't yet see ourselves.

He believed in us. I know he believed in me.

Dean Szabo wasn't going to let me give up on myself. He challenged me, encouraged me, and held me accountable. Sometimes all three in one conversation.

Now, after more than two decades of serving students at Florida Southern College, I find myself in the same role Dean Szabo once held. I still carry his influence into my work. I want to be firm when needed, compassionate when someone struggles, and willing to listen before judging. I want students to know someone believes in who they can become.

Just as he believed in me.

Recently I found this June 1982 letter welcoming me to Florida Southern. At the bottom was Dean Szabo's signature. Forty-four years later, it means far more than it did to that young man preparing for college.

And there's another part of this story that makes me smile.

Today I work alongside his daughter, Shari Szabo, our Dean of Student Solutions. Our offices share a wall. Every day, I work just a few feet from the daughter of the man who helped shape my journey.

There's something wonderful about that.

We don't always recognize who's shaping us while it's happening. Sometimes it takes decades to understand their influence.

Every time I believe in a student who struggles to believe in themselves, I hope I'm honoring a little of what Dean Szabo gave me.

Who believed in you before you fully believed in yourself?

Former Florida Southern College baseball standout Brian Reves recently stopped by the office.

Reves compiled a 23-13 record and recorded six saves during his four seasons with the Mocs (2002-05), capping his career with the 2005 NCAA title.

Reves went 6-2 that season and pitched 2+ inning of relief in the final against North Florida.

Reves also served as an assistant coach with the Mocs during the 2012-13 seasons

It’s always great to have former Florida Southern College student-athletes come back to visit with current Mocs!

Yesterday, former baseball standout Steve Nichols stopped at Henley Field and spoke with this year’s team.

‘Bumpy’ was a member of three national championship teams as a player (1972, 1974, 1975) and was on the coaching staff for two more (1978, 1981)!

Nichols was the Most Valuable Player of the 1975 South Region Tournament.

‘Bumpy’ has scouted for a number of major league organizations including the White Sox and Mets.

From a baseball family, his grandfather Chet Sr., pitched for the Pirates, Giants and Phillies (1926-32) & his dad, Chet Jr., pitched for the Boston/Milwaukee Braves, Red Sox and Reds (1951-1964).

I was digging through some old boxes at Mom’s this weekend and found the letter telling me when to move onto campus at Florida Southern College in 1982. There was my housing assignment, my roommate’s name, and instructions for beginning a chapter whose significance I couldn’t possibly have understood yet.

This is me with my freshman roommate, Rich Rasmussen. Rich and I knew each other growing up in Kissimmee and came to Florida Southern together. It was good to have a familiar face as we started that new chapter.

I also found a letter from the cross country coach, Ed Plowman, inviting me to try out for the team. Clearly, he had not seen me before mailing that invitation. 😂 I appreciate his optimism.

Dr. Plowman was a sociology professor, and he became one of my favorite professors of all. His invitation to run still makes me laugh, but remembering him brings a much deeper smile.

Reading those move-in instructions now, I couldn’t help thinking about how many students I’ve welcomed to this same campus as Dean of Students.

In 1982, I was the one preparing to arrive. I wish I could tell that young man in the picture a little about what was ahead. He probably wouldn’t believe me.

Every year, as we welcome students to campus, I get to watch them begin their own version of this story. Some arrive with a friend from home. Others don’t know a soul. Along the way, they meet roommates, professors, and people who help them find their place and shape who they become.

Finding these letters reminded me that I was once right there, too. Arriving with a familiar face, meeting people who would matter, and having no idea how much this place would come to mean to me.

Who do you remember most from your first year of college?

For the next installment of our Alumni Success Series, we are featuring Kim Downs ’95 and Morgan Word ’24, MBA '26.

Their paths first crossed through Delta Sigma Pi, the business fraternity both joined as Florida Southern students. Downs, a graduate of the School of Business, had returned to campus to speak with members about her career in health care and quality improvement. Word was among the students who connected with her that day.

After gaining an internship with Downs' team at Watson Clinic, her internship eventually developed into a full-time position, which she now holds as a Contracting & QI/VBS Associate.
