🩺 Stethoscopes for Success! 💚

On Monday, August 24, we had the pleasure of welcoming the newest members of the Farmingdale State College Nursing family at our Stethoscope for Success Ceremony!

Thanks to the generosity of our donors and the support of the Farmingdale Alumni Association, our incoming nursing students received their very first stethoscopes—an important tool that will accompany them throughout their education and into their future careers as nurses.

More than just a piece of equipment, each stethoscope represents the support of the FSC community and the beginning of an exciting journey into the nursing profession.

🌍🩺 Nursing Beyond Borders: Nepal 2026

Farmingdale State College Nursing students and Professor Tesi Thomas have safely returned from an unforgettable NUR 240 study abroad practicum in Nepal.

From June 3–13, our seven nursing students partnered with Manna Mission, local clinics, schools, churches, and community leaders throughout Kathmandu to deliver community-based health services while gaining firsthand experience in transcultural nursing.

During the trip, the team provided health screenings, including blood pressure, pulse, blood glucose, BMI, height/weight, and growth-chart assessments. They also delivered health education on oral hygiene, hand hygiene, nutrition, and wellness; completed school health outreach for 112 primary school students; participated in home visits; and observed care at Shalom Clinic and Anandaban Hospital.

These experiences exposed students to primary care, wound care, physiotherapy, reconstructive services, and leprosy treatment programs, while deepening their understanding of social determinants of health, preventive care, and culturally responsive nursing practice.

Beyond the clinical work, students immersed themselves in Nepal’s rich history, traditions, cuisine, and daily life in the Himalayas.

We are incredibly proud of the compassion, adaptability, teamwork, clinical skill, and cultural humility demonstrated by our students. Thank you to Professor Thomas, Manna Mission, and all of our partners in Nepal for making this meaningful experience possible.

Today we celebrate and honor three incredible nursing faculty members as they begin their well-earned retirement. 💚

✨ Dr. Fran Cherkis— Thank you for your dedication, compassion, and the lasting impact you have made on both your students and colleagues. Your commitment to nursing education has truly made a difference. Dr. Cherkis has long served as the clinical coordinator securing countless placements for our nursing students ensuring they have the absolute best clinical experience.

✨ Dr. Susan Barrett Landau— Your mentorship, guidance, and passion for teaching have inspired countless future nurses throughout the years. Thank you for everything you have contributed to our program. Dr. Landau taught many courses in our program, most importantly our pharmacology lectures shaping our students understanding of medications and how they are effectively used in practice. She also participated and coordinated in many of our nursing Civic engagement events.

✨ Dr. Sharon Henle— Your years of service, collaboration , and unwavering support for students and faculty alike will never be forgotten. Your legacy will continue through the many lives you have touched. Dr. Henle was a dedicated instructor in behavioral health and community nursing, and was a valued instructor through this specialized nursing specialty rotating to various sites with students and she also participated in many civic engagement events.

Thank you all for your commitment, hard work, and years of service to the nursing profession and our community. While you will be greatly missed, we are so excited for this next chapter in your lives.

Farmingdale State College Nursing students were proud to participate in the Give Kids a Smile event, hosted by the Dental Hygiene Department.

As part of this meaningful interprofessional community health event, our nursing students assisted by taking blood pressure screenings and providing health education to parents, caregivers, and community members in attendance.

Give Kids a Smile, sponsored nationally by the American Dental Association, helps provide access to preventive oral health care for underserved children. We are proud of our students for supporting this important event and representing the Nursing Department through service, education, and community engagement💚

Farmingdale State College Nursing students were proud to participate in the Spring 2026 Heart Saver Event at Seaford Middle School.

Our students had the opportunity to support this meaningful community health screening by assisting with vital signs, learning about EKG administration, and helping with the transcription of cardiac ultrasound information. This event provided a valuable hands-on service learning experience while allowing our students to give back to the community in a meaningful way.

We are proud of our nursing students for representing the program with professionalism, compassion, and a commitment to community health 💚
