"This is one of the first times in human history where we could actually choose extinction as a civilization.”

What’s the deal with AI in the nuclear age? Dr. Jeffrey Lewis, Lecturer with Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation (@fsi_stanford) spoke with us at the Global Nobel Laureates Assembly on AI and Nuclear War. His takeaway? As global existential threats increase, the need for global cooperation becomes ever more important.

What is your part in a conversation that seems so big? Get educated. These lessons go beyond summits of diplomats and laureates, we all have a responsibility to the world we are shaping.

They're back! After six weeks away at internships in Belgium, Austria, Washington DC, and beyond, students from @stanford.global and The Europe Center are returning to The Farm with a new perspective on some of the world's most pressing policy and research challenges.

Hard tissue samples were examined, data centers monitored, European politics studied, legislatures observed, and, of course, friendships made.

How does U.S. foreign and defense policy actually get made?

James Fearon, a leading scholar of international relations, joins Colin Kahl on the #WorldClassPodcast to talk about what he learned from working in the Pentagon, how his research into the causes of war can help frame what's happening in Ukraine and Iran, and how an active conflict could be avoided with China in the Indo-Pacific.

We are delighted to welcome Pei-Chia Lan, a prominent international sociologist, as the Wang and Chen Senior Fellow in Taiwan Studies at @fsi_stanford and director of the Taiwan Program at APARC, effective September 1, 2026. She is the first to hold FSI’s new chair in Taiwan Studies, which was endowed by Steve and Jamie Chen and other generous donors.

Lan joins Stanford from National Taiwan University, where she was a distinguished professor in the Department of Sociology and the founding director of the Global Asia Research Center. Her research explores the complexity of intersecting social inequalities in everyday life, shaped by macropower dynamics such as globalization and international migration.

“I hope to build the Taiwan Program into a vibrant intellectual hub that connects Taiwan and North America, brings greater visibility to the rich scholarship of the Taiwan studies community, and places Taiwan in dialogue with other Asian societies through a transnational and comparative lens,” she says.

Over the last nine months, I’ve traveled across America speaking about the ideas in my book, Autocrats vs. Democrats.

I've been to 13 states and given dozens of talks— including four in Texas, two in Montana, and over a dozen in California alone. This has allowed me to meet and hear from people in different parts of our great country, and I’ve summarized some of my main takeaways in a new essay at McFaul’s World.

I also want to say thank you to everyone who came out. The enthusiastic, welcoming crowds, the standing ovations, and the long book-signing lines have inspired me to stay in the fight for defining America’s role in the world!

I’m taking a break for the rest of the summer, but I’ll be back on the road this fall with stops at Cornell University, Salve Regina University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Utah among those planned.

If you have ideas for other stops, send me an email!

Visit McFaul's World or see link in bio to read my latest essay.

How does technology shape society, and who gets a voice in that future?

That's the question Tyler Smith ('26) already had on his mind when he walked onto Stanford's campus as a new member of the Class of 2026 of the Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy. An East Coast native, Smith came west to study the impacts of technology right at the source in Silicon Valley.

"In preparing for a career in government, I really wanted experience outside the D.C. bubble. I thought Stanford would be a great place to learn what technology looks like from the side of innovators and people building it," he explains.

Degree now in hand, Tyler is heading to Nairobi next to work on digital infrastructure development, a natural next step in his journey to understand how emerging markets navigate AI sovereignty in an increasingly connected world.

"MIP opened doors to experiences I couldn’t find elsewhere and pushed me to broaden my perspective and find my passion."

Yukiko Ueda (‘26) came to the Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy (MIP) from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry. The Tokyo native had always been interested in climate policy, and after two years of exploration at Stanford, she is on her way to Houston, Texas to join a nuclear energy startup.

"Being part of MIP expanded my world in ways I didn’t expect," says Ueda. "This is a place that overflows with positive entrepreneurial energy and where cutting-edge technology research is always happening. There are a lot of policy schools, and each has unique points and strengths, but this place is really very special."

The #WorldCup isn't the only place to find soccer stars. Once a soccer captain at Harvard, Nik White ('26), an alum of the Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy (MIP), is taking his game from the field into a career in public service and policy. ⚽

Entering the MIP program, White planned to specialize in governance and development. But a trip to Vienna and a year of study with FSI scholars working at the forefront of how AI is changing everything from local politics to national security and global economics helped him find a new depth to his interests and plans.

That process of discovery is precisely why Nik values the time he's spent at Stanford.

"MIP is fine-tuned to give you new perspectives and push you toward what you’re passionate about," he explains. "You have the opportunity to branch out across campus to the business school, law school, and beyond. It's been transformational."

Our alumni are aiming for the stars! 🚀

Humzah Khan ('26) specialized in Cyber Policy and Security during his studies in the Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy (MIP) program, and now he's on his way to join the Starlink policy team at SpaceX. Originally planning to focus on environmental studies, Khan changed his emphasis to tech policy when he realized what a sea change AI was going to be in all aspects of society and the economy. Now in his post-graduation career, he's pivoting again.

"I didn't particularly focus on space, telecom, or satellites despite the many opportunities to do so at Stanford," admits Khan. "But MIP was great for the meta-skill, which is to understand different stakeholders, map out their positions and incentives on specific policy interests, and figure out how to align the incentives of the critical stakeholders. The capstone really helped me practice this skillset. Even though the capstone was in a totally different sector and different technology, the meta-skill is the same."
