🌊The sea carries the world’s data, energy and trade, and it’s more connected and digital than ever: 99% of global internet traffic runs through subsea cables, 1.5 million km of them (Fincantieri, 2026).
Protecting and running this domain has become an engineering challenge as much as a naval one.

That’s what the Fincantieri Maritime Dual-Use Hackathon is about. 👇

Three real challenges, straight from Fincantieri:
⚙️ OT Cybersecurity & Blast Radius Analysis
📐 Piping Layout Optimization
🚢 Software-Defined Vessel

36 hours to build on real problems alongside engineers, developers, founders and researchers, and the chance to keep developing the most promising concepts with Fincantieri’s experts.

No maritime background required, just bring your skills.

"This is one of the first times in human history where we could actually choose extinction as a civilization.”

What’s the deal with AI in the nuclear age? Dr. Jeffrey Lewis, Lecturer with Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation (@fsi_stanford) spoke with us at the Global Nobel Laureates Assembly on AI and Nuclear War. His takeaway? As global existential threats increase, the need for global cooperation becomes ever more important.

What is your part in a conversation that seems so big? Get educated. These lessons go beyond summits of diplomats and laureates, we all have a responsibility to the world we are shaping.

Sunny Park joined @fsi_stanford e-Entrepreneurship Japan as a high schooler chasing good grades — she's now finishing her Biology degree at Imperial College London and co-founding Eidolon Therapeutics, a biotech startup tackling immunotherapy resistance in cancer treatment.

Her biggest lesson? Entrepreneurship isn't about starting a company, it's a mindset of taking ownership of your own path.

Great things get built in great partnerships 🤝
We’re proud to announce the official partners joining us for the Fincantieri Maritime Dual-Use Hackathon this October in San Francisco.

Two of the sharpest names in security innovation are backing the event: @ucbisgofficial the UC Berkeley Institute for Security and Governance, and @fsi_stanford the Stanford Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation (Freeman Spogli Institute), together with Mission Applied Berkeley and the Berkeley Gateway Accelerator @bga.gram. They bring the credibility, the networks and the community that put this hackathon on the map for the people who should be in the room.

And the building doesn’t stop when the 48 hours do. Silicon Mountain will help the most promising projects go further, with venture-building support, mentorship, and access to subject-matter experts, including engineers from @fincantieri, to refine and develop the winning ideas.

Add @qualcomm hardware and on-site engineering, and you get a rare setup: real challenges, real tools, and real people who can take your prototype somewhere after the weekend.

📍 MTB Innovation Center, San Francisco
 🗓 October 16–18, 2026
No maritime background required, just the ability to build.

We are delighted to welcome Pei-Chia Lan, a prominent international sociologist, as the Wang and Chen Senior Fellow in Taiwan Studies at @fsi_stanford and director of the Taiwan Program at APARC, effective September 1, 2026. She is the first to hold FSI’s new chair in Taiwan Studies, which was endowed by Steve and Jamie Chen and other generous donors.

Lan joins Stanford from National Taiwan University, where she was a distinguished professor in the Department of Sociology and the founding director of the Global Asia Research Center. Her research explores the complexity of intersecting social inequalities in everyday life, shaped by macropower dynamics such as globalization and international migration.

“I hope to build the Taiwan Program into a vibrant intellectual hub that connects Taiwan and North America, brings greater visibility to the rich scholarship of the Taiwan studies community, and places Taiwan in dialogue with other Asian societies through a transnational and comparative lens,” she says.

Over the last nine months, I’ve traveled across America speaking about the ideas in my book, Autocrats vs. Democrats.

I've been to 13 states and given dozens of talks— including four in Texas, two in Montana, and over a dozen in California alone. This has allowed me to meet and hear from people in different parts of our great country, and I’ve summarized some of my main takeaways in a new essay at McFaul’s World.

I also want to say thank you to everyone who came out. The enthusiastic, welcoming crowds, the standing ovations, and the long book-signing lines have inspired me to stay in the fight for defining America’s role in the world!

I’m taking a break for the rest of the summer, but I’ll be back on the road this fall with stops at Cornell University, Salve Regina University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Utah among those planned.

If you have ideas for other stops, send me an email!

Visit McFaul's World or see link in bio to read my latest essay.

It has been a fantastic week with our 2026 Fisher Family Summer Fellows! 🌎️

This first week, our cohort dove into foundational questions of democracy, development, and the rule of law with talks from @francis.fukuyama, @larryjdiamond, @kathryn.stoner, Erik Jensen, and @ambmcfaul, exploring everything from “What is Democracy?” to global challenges facing democratic governance today. Fellows also examined case studies on autocracy and local governance in the Middle East with Hesham Sallam and @aycalem, dug into China’s global information ecosystem with Jennifer Pan, and joined a fireside chat on energy and geopolitics with Arun Majumdar (@stanford.doerr) and David Fedor.

Beyond the classroom, fellows sharpened their storytelling skills in a communication workshop with @mattabrahams to prepare for their upcoming “TED-style” Spotlight Talks and had the chance to build connections with faculty and one another along the way.

Next week, fellows will continue their Spotlight Talks, learn how deliberative democracy can drive positive change, explore the politics of migrant scapegoating, and hear from and @hrf panel of regional experts, including taking a look at HRF’s Tyranny Tracker index.
