Deep in the heart of the Rockies, a new museum allows visitors to tap into the deep roots of the Forest Service, as well as see the future of forestry in the United States spreading out like a canopy above them.

There’s a new museum a mile past the airport, and it just opened this summer.

The National Conservation Legacy Center is the first museum in the country built entirely around the story of American conservation. The building itself is worth the trip, 30,000 square feet of mass timber with sixteen tree species built right into the structure.

Inside, the exhibits walk you through forests and mountains, watersheds and rangelands, fire and wilderness, hands-on enough that an hour flies by. There’s a lookout tower replica built right across from the main museum, rising 46 feet, and an interpretive trail across the 31-acre campus.

Missoula’s been surrounded and shaped by this history for over a century. Now there’s finally a place that tells the whole story and it’s beautiful!

A big Thank You! to everyone who helped us get a sheep wagon for our Discovery Trail. Some amazing old school, block & tackle, technology was used to get it off the trailer then we used our lawn tractor to pull it into its new home. Come see it daily from 10am-4pm. by @fsmuseum
