Deep in the heart of the Rockies, a new museum allows visitors to tap into the deep roots of the Forest Service, as well as see the future of forestry in the United States spreading out like a canopy above them.

The National Conservation Legacy Center in Missoula, Montana, gives generations of Forest Service employees, retirees and their families a place to see their stories remembered. https://www.fs.usda.gov/about-agency/features/history-finds-home

Missoula, Montana parents, the National Museum of Forest Service History (@fsmuseum) is officially on our weekly rotation, because my daughter asks to go back every single week 👀🌲

Start with the scavenger hunt sheet at the front desk, then work your way through the interactive exhibits and up to the fire lookout. The museum’s new home, the National Conservation Legacy Center, showcases a collection of more than 55,000 preserved Forest Service artifacts and historic materials.

It’s open daily from 10 to 4, and Missoula residents get in free on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 🤎

🗽✨ Calling all mamas and papas! ✨🗽

A few of you have asked me about taking a little one to NYC, so here’s my answer: stop hesitating and GO!

For our Montana kid, the city is a crash course in all the wonderful ways people live, eat, and play. On a single subway ride you might hear half a dozen languages. You can have dumplings one night, curry the next, and then argue over who makes the best slice and bagel (the “research” is delicious).

Yes, it’s a GIANT city, but it’s also bursting with kid magic: Broadway shows, world-class museums, and parks and playgrounds tucked into every neighborhood.

🍎 LAST YEAR we:

-Strolled the High Line
-Visited BonBon Swedish candy IN PERSON (OMG!)
-Got goosebumps at The Lion King on Broadway
-Soaked up the lights of Times Square
-Hung upside down in Central Park
-Got a little magic at Harry Potter New York
-Dove into the sprinkle pool at the Museum of Ice Cream
-Feasted in Little Italy and Chinatown (hello, Chinese Tuxedo! 🥢)

🍎 LAST WEEKEND (rain and all!) we:

-Made The Bowery our home base (pinch me, it’s such a quintessential NYC experience!)
-Rode the subway like pros
-Flew on a magic carpet at Aladdin on Broadway
-Explored the American Museum of Natural History (we barely scratched the surface!), then snuggled up in bed that night to watch Night at the Museum. Best. Combo. Ever. 💛
-Sushi’d at Sugarfish
-Got our pup Rex’s portrait made (thank you, Ben Lenovitz!)
-LEGO Store’d
-Ate meatballs at Freemans
-Got lost in the stacks at The Strand
-Milk Bar’d (holy heck, I’ve missed cereal milk soft serve!)
-Ate some of the best dumplings EVER at Lin & Daughters, a family-owned gem built on family recipes
-Snuck in a visit to one of my favorite interior stores

All said… we came home with tired legs, full hearts and bellies, and a kiddo who can’t stop talking about it.

So mamas and papas: don’t hesitate. NYC is calling!

I’m happy to share tips and our plans for next time! Here’s to you, Big Apple!

Our Kiwanis Club had a fantastic field trip to the new National Museum of Forest Service History! 🌲🏛️

We were especially proud to have one of our own members, Dave Stack, lead our tour. Dave has been a valued member of our Kiwanis Club for more than 40 years and also serves as the museum’s curator! What a special connection to have a longtime club member helping preserve and share such an important part of our nation’s history.

We enjoyed learning more about the history of the U.S. Forest Service and its deep connection to Missoula, our forests, and the people who have shaped this region.

If you haven’t visited yet, we encourage you to make the trip! There’s so much to discover and appreciate.

Together, a variety of projects have been completed. These projects have ranged from hands-on STEM experiences to working outside with the National Museum of Forest Service History!

There’s a new museum a mile past the airport, and it just opened this summer.

The National Conservation Legacy Center is the first museum in the country built entirely around the story of American conservation. The building itself is worth the trip, 30,000 square feet of mass timber with sixteen tree species built right into the structure.

Inside, the exhibits walk you through forests and mountains, watersheds and rangelands, fire and wilderness, hands-on enough that an hour flies by. There’s a lookout tower replica built right across from the main museum, rising 46 feet, and an interpretive trail across the 31-acre campus.

Missoula’s been surrounded and shaped by this history for over a century. Now there’s finally a place that tells the whole story and it’s beautiful!

📍 6305 US Highway 10 W Missoula, MT. Open daily 10am to 4pm

🎢It's not a day in the life when managing being a working parent and the spouse of a pilot is full-time chaos. When I'm solo on weekends, I am for an errand day and a fun day. This was our fun day.

This is a highlight real. There were plenty of the tough moments that come with parenting.

What I want you to see in our life, is that working and living a full life, while your spouse has a demanding career is possible! 🛩️🫶🏼
