Today we welcomed students from Muskegon Career Technical Center’s Construction Trades program to the Granger Center for Construction & HVACR at Ferris State University.

These visits are a great opportunity for students already working with their hands and learning the trades to see where those skills can take them next. They toured our facilities, learned more about Construction Management and HVACR, and explored the many career opportunities available in the construction industry.

We appreciate the opportunity to connect with the next generation of our industry and show them that the skills they are developing today can become the foundation for some pretty incredible careers.

Thanks for making the trip, Muskegon CTC. We hope to see some of you back on campus as Bulldogs!

One of the things we love about our Construction Management program is that we get students hands-on from the very beginning.

These are freshmen in their first semester, in CONM 111 Construction Practices, already placing and finishing concrete.

Why? Because if you’re going to lead people in construction, you need to understand and respect the work they do.

We aren’t trying to make our students concrete finishers. We want them to experience firsthand the skill, effort, and knowledge it takes to do the work. That experience builds respect for the trades—and that respect will make them better construction managers and better leaders.

You can learn a lot about construction in a classroom, but some lessons you need to experience yourself. And we start in semester one.

Last week we had the opportunity to watch two of our Construction Management alumni, Taggart Town of @erhardtconstruction and Mike Novakowski of @evconstruction1945, receive the Ferris State University Distinguished Alumni Award.

What made it special was knowing the impact these two have made well beyond their own careers. They have made significant contributions to the construction industry, the next generation of construction professionals, the companies and people they have worked with, and the communities they serve.

Our industry is built on relationships, leadership, and people who are willing to give back. Taggart and Mike are great examples of what that looks like.

It was pretty special to sit there today and watch two from our Construction Management alumni family be recognized for the difference they have made throughout their careers and in the lives of others.

Congratulations, Taggart and Mike. This recognition is very well deserved!

Keep making a difference. by @fsu_ctmg

One of the best things about CONM 374 – Professional Relationships is getting students out of their comfort zones and putting them into situations they are going to experience in the construction industry.

Today we focused on mental health safety and substance use, but this wasn’t a lecture. Students worked through role-play scenarios based on real situations that happen in our industry.

They had to sit across from another person and figure out how to handle the conversation. What do you do when you notice someone on your crew isn’t acting like themselves? How do you approach an employee you’re concerned may be struggling with substance use? What do you say when someone shares that things aren’t going well outside of work?

There isn’t always a perfect script for these conversations. And that is why we practice them.

Someday these students are going to be project managers, superintendents, and leaders responsible for people. We would much rather have them experience some of these uncomfortable conversations for the first time in my classroom than on a jobsite.

We can teach students how to build a schedule, manage a budget, read a set of plans. We also need to teach them how to lead and care for the people behind the project.

That’s what the Professional Relationships class is about. by @fsu_ctmg

Couldn’t ask for a better day to get outside and fly drones with our BCTM 217 Virtual Design and Construction students!

There’s a big difference between talking about construction technology in the classroom and putting it into students’ hands. Yesterday we got outside, learned the technology, and saw how drones are being used across the construction industry.

Two days. Great turnout. Countless connections.

Our students showed up, our industry partners showed up, and the energy was incredible.

A huge thank you to every employer who spent time on campus connecting with our students, and to our students for representing Ferris Construction Technology & Management so well.

This is what it’s all about: relationships, opportunities, and building what’s next. by @fsu_ctmg

There’s something pretty cool about watching our newest Construction Technology & Management students open their freshman welcome kits.

Earlier this semester, our incoming students received their PPE, program gear, and plenty of swag generously donated by our industry partner, and judging by the reactions, I think the kits were a hit!

But these kits represent more than just hard hats and swag. They’re one of the first reminders to our students that they are entering an industry that is already invested in them and wants to see them succeed.

A huge THANK YOU to all of our industry partners who contributed and continue to support our students and the Ferris State University Construction Technology & Management program. Your involvement makes a difference from Day One.

Welcome to Construction Management. Put on the hard hat, it’s time to Build What’s Next.

At Ferris State University, we don’t just teach students about construction management. We teach them how to manage construction.

Our students learn by doing; estimating, scheduling, planning, solving problems, using industry technology, collaborating with professionals, and applying what they learn to real-world construction challenges.

Theory matters. But knowing how to apply it is what prepares someone to lead.

That’s the Ferris difference.
