We’ve been a neighbor of Jist since they were called Little Tokyo Cafe. Back then they were known for their chashu shumai special. Our family would go over there for lunch at least once a week, if not more.

When Glen brought back his mom’s chashu shumai special during the pandemic it was such a treat for all of us that grew up with this menu.

These days our favorite is omurice - a Japanese comfort food speciality. Jist makes theirs with hickory ham and a homemade sauce that will make you full for the entire day.

Jist might only be celebrating 10 years but they’ve been around for more than 5 decades.

Korey here.

It’s a Nisei Week tradition for us to set up our shaved ice stand in front of the shop during the Grand Parade.

I’ve been doing this since I was a kid, my dad did it when he was a kid, not sure about before that though lol

Nisei Week is pretty special to our family and the community. Like the internment, the pandemic also created an interruption to this annual event but my hope is the crowds will return for our open streets parade and enjoy this historical and cultural celebration with us. Hopefully someday soon it won’t just be the longest running cultural parade in the US but also the biggest.

Sudare is a traditional white bean mochi covered with kanten and a piece of yokan on top.

Pretty sure someone is wondering ‘What’s kanten?’ Basically it’s gelatin to keep the mochi moist and delicious. We only use ‘kanten’ for Sudare and Ogura, our shiniest mochi.

Fugetsu-Do changes the color of the yokan depending on the season. The colors reflect the seasons of Japan.
