In LA historic business @fugetsudo in Little Tokyo. They’ve been selling mochi and manju since 1903. Even in its 3rd generation of ownership the line of customers is out the door every weekend.

Little Tokyo has battled through early racism at the turn of the century, Japanese incarceration during WWII, and currently, gentrification. Many people don’t realize what a strong and prosperous Japanese community existed in California, and particularly, Los Angeles before the war.

We are in a moment where the horrors of mass incarceration without due process of people deemed as “enemies” is re-emerging as a traumatic reality for so many families and an ugly stain on the American experience.

One day I will be able to enjoy a sweet treat without remembering this bitter history. But that day is not today.
