Ever wondered what it’s like to be an English Teaching Assistant in Slovakia? It starts in the classroom, but it doesn't end there. Over the past month, our ETAs have been engaging with their communities in ways that go far beyond English lessons. From cooking pancakes, tacos, and New York-style bagels with their students to trying floorball for the first time. Outside the classroom, the ETAs have been discovering Slovakia together. From white-water rafting near Liptovský Mikuláš to taking on the Košice Marathon. They are embracing new experiences while learning more about the country and its culture. Whether sharing a meal, playing sports, or exploring Slovakia, these moments are at the heart of the Fulbright mission: fostering mutual understanding through lasting personal connections and cultural exchange. Stay tuned to follow their journey throughout the year! ✨ #FulbrightSlovakia #Fulbright #ETA #culturalexchange taken in Slovakia by @fulbrightslovakia

📚 51 dní v inom svete Naša čerstvá absolventka Zuzana Polónyová strávila začiatkom roka 2026 nezabudnuteľných 51 dní v USA v rámci programu Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program pre stredoškolských učiteľov. O svojom pobyte napísala vtipnú, osobnú a nenáročnú „spoveď“, v ktorej približuje svoje zážitky a postrehy. Orientation week may be over, but the adventure is just beginning! Last week, we welcomed our newest cohort of U.S. Fulbright grantees to Slovakia and helped them prepare for the exciting months ahead. For us at the Fulbright Commission, this is always an exciting time of year. After months of applications, emails, paperwork, and preparations, we finally get to meet the grantees who chose to embark on this journey, successfully navigated the selection process, accepted their awards, crossed the Atlantic, and arrived in Slovakia to begin their Fulbright experience. This academic year, Fulbright Slovakia will welcome 14 English Teaching Assistants, 2 U.S. Student Researchers, and 4 U.S. Scholars. So far, 13 ETAs, 2 U.S. Students, and 1 U.S. Scholar have already arrived in Slovakia, while the remaining grantees will join us later in the year. Throughout the week, our grantees explored Slovak history, culture, education, and contemporary social issues, gaining a deeper understanding of the country and the communities they will engage with during their grants. Throughout the year, they will work with Slovak students, researchers, educators, and local communities, sharing their knowledge and experience while fostering mutual understanding between Slovakia and the United States. Orientation week also provided opportunities to connect with fellow grantees, Fulbright alumni, partners, mentors, and members of the wider Fulbright community, while exploring Bratislava and gaining practical insights for living in Slovakia. We're especially happy to welcome back Jonah, who has returned for a second year as an English Teaching Assistant in Trebišov. Want to learn more about our grantees, their host institutions, home universities, and research or teaching projects? Visit 👉 https://fulbright.sk/en/grantees We wish all our grantees an inspiring, meaningful, and successful year ahead. Welcome to Slovakia! 🇸🇰🇺🇸 #FulbrightGrantees #CulturalExchange #Education #Research #Teaching #Slovakia #mutualunderstanding by @fulbrightslovakia

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of bringing the Fulbright Slovakia community together in the beautiful Hall of Mirrors at Bratislava’s historic Primate’s Palace for an evening of celebration, reflection, and new beginnings. As the third regional event of this year’s Fulbright gatherings, following receptions in Košice and Banská Bystrica, the evening marked two significant anniversaries: 250 years of the United States and 80 years of @the_fulbright_program. We also welcomed the new U.S. Fulbright cohort for the 2026-2027 academic year. Alumni, current Slovak and U.S. grantees, host institutions, partners, and friends of the program came together to celebrate the enduring power of educational and cultural exchange. Milestones such as these remind us not only of achievements, but also of the values that inspire them. As we commemorate 250 years of America, we are reminded that the story of the United States is reflected not only within its borders, but also in the partnerships, friendships, and connections it has built around the world. The Fulbright Program is a powerful expression of that legacy. When Senator J. William Fulbright established the program in the aftermath of World War II, he believed that greater mutual understanding could help create a more peaceful world. Eighty years later, that vision remains as relevant as ever. While Fulbright is known for academic excellence, innovation, and international cooperation, at its heart it is about people, fostering dialogue, broadening perspectives, and building relationships that endure long after a grant ends. One One of the highlights of the evening was welcoming our newest U.S. Fulbright grantees, who will spend the coming academic year teaching, researching, and engaging with communities across Slovakia. We are excited to support them as they begin what will undoubtedly be a transformative journey. Seeing generations of Fulbrighters come together in Bratislava was a powerful reminder that the true legacy of Fulbright lies not only in accomplishments, but in the human connections it creates. Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating! @usembassyslovakia by @fulbrightslovakia
