Whoever said yoga was easy clearly hasn’t held a pose for more than five seconds

A common misconception is that flexibility and how far we can stretch is the focal point of yoga, but strength actually plays a pretty important role in how we move, too.

It’s one thing to get into a position, but being able to move in and out of it with fluidity and control is a different kind of challenge.

Your muscles are doing quite a bit of work even when it doesn’t look like much is happening, which is why a slower practice can sometimes feel even more challenging than you’d expect.

Flexibility helps us explore our range of movement, while strength helps us feel supported as we move through it. The two work together to give an equally challenging but soothing workout ✨

We’ve been taught that we have to push harder, shrink ourselves, fix what’s “wrong,” or prove our worth before we deserve to feel good in our bodies.

That’s the story we’ve inherited.

We think there’s a better one.

We believe that the body isn’t a problem to solve. It’s the starting place. You are not the modification, you are the blueprint.

What if you gave yourself permission: permission to rest, to be challenged without punishment, to take up space, to trust yourself, and to move in ways that actually feel sustainable.

Choosing to trust your body is a radical act in a culture that constantly tells us our bodies need to be smaller, stronger, younger, or somehow “better” before they’re worthy.

And let’s be super clear: We are not here to get smaller or skinnier.

We are here to exist confidently, take up space, and move through the world on our own terms. taken in Portland, Oregon by @fullbodiedyogapdx

Emails, meetings, tabs on tabs on tabs - movement is the release your body needs.

Think about how tight your shoulders and neck feel at the end of the day, or how you’re mentally drained from staring at screens for 8 hours.

The physical release that comes with movement is what you’ll feel first - your muscles get warmer and looser while your shoulders finally drop. But then there’s the relief of not having to do mental gymnastics or constantly jump from one thing to the next. You can finally just relax, let yourself settle.

Priceless 🤍

Different flows for different folks 🌿

There’s no one way a body should move, no one body that belongs in a movement space, and no single expression we’re all working toward.

But when we’ve spent years seeing the same bodies celebrated in movement spaces, the same versions of poses held up as the goal, and the same ideas of what being “fit” is supposed to look like, it can be hard not to internalize the idea that maybe movement just isn’t for us.

We want to keep questioning that. To notice the expectations we’ve picked up along the way, get curious about where they came from, and make space for a relationship with movement that isn’t built around becoming smaller, looking a certain way, or proving what your body can do.

Because the best kind of movement is the kind that makes you feel more connected to yourself and overall / good!

Accessibility in yoga includes the language we use, too.

If you’re new to yoga, some of the words you hear in class might feel like a language of their own. So let this be a guide of a few common terms to make your practice feel a little more familiar.

Save this one for your next class ✨

Slowing down and stopping are two very different things.

There’s so much emphasis on pushing when we talk about movement. Go deeper, hold longer, get stronger, do more. And there’s nothing wrong with challenging yourself, but it’s really easy to get so used to overriding what your body is telling you that you stop listening altogether.

Moving slowly doesn’t equal laziness or weakness. We like to think there are some amazing benefits to slowing down in movements. You notice where you’re holding tension. You can focus your breathing better. You may even start to enjoy the movement more rather than thinking it’s something you “have to do in order to be healthy.”

That can look like a slower yoga practice, taking your time through a stretch, lying on the floor for ten minutes, or giving yourself somewhere to fully settle with Reiki or a sound bath.

Movement is a privilege - fall in love with what feels good for you.

Yoga has a PR problem and we need to talk about it.

Most of the prerequisites you hear about with yoga, truthfully aren’t real. You don’t need to touch your toes before you walk into your first class. You don’t need the matching set (unless you want the matching set!). You definitely don’t need to look a certain way or have a specific body type.

And using a block, strap, bolster, chair, wall, or whatever else helps the movement work for your body isn’t “cheating.” That’s literally what they’re there for.

Online, yoga picked up this image of being for a very specific kind of person with a very specific kind of body - when the actual practice leaves so much room for meeting yourself where you are.

And there are plenty of spaces just like ours, with communities of people from all walks of life, who are moving their body with yoga and happier every day because of it!

When was the last time you did something without the need to be productive or useful to someone else?

Doing things not just because it needs to get done or because someone is waiting on you or because it’s technically “good for you.” And then we wonder why making time for ourselves feels like one more thing we have to squeeze in.

Maybe it doesn’t need to be another thing we’re responsible for doing well.

Maybe we just need more things in our lives that give fill our own cups. Things we look forward to. Things that make us feel a little lighter afterward and happier after. Things we’d still choose even if they weren’t productive, impressive, or accomplishing anything at all.

You’re allowed to have things that are just for you.

And for us, this space is definitely our ‘thing’ 🤍
