To draw, for Michael Iampieri, was to search

Iampieri spent nearly four decades as an educator and his whole life as an artist. For him, drawing was not simply preparation from something else-it was a complete and rigorous form of artistic thought.

On view in our Rosenberg Gallery until October 23, 2026.

Did any of you ever take a class with him? If so, what was the most impactful lesson he gave you?

Welcome to another edition of Full Circle’s camera of the week! Today we are proud to showcase the petri half 7.

The Petri Half 7 is a vintage half-frame 35mm film camera released in 1962 by the Kuribayashi Camera Industry (which renamed itself to the Petri camera company that same year). Built to compete with the highly popular Olympus Pen series, the Half 7 offered a unique pocket-sized design and completely battery-free automatic operation.
Chronology and Context

Predecessor: It arrived as an updated, streamlined version of the 1961 Petri Compact E and the original 1960 Petri Half.
The Name: The “7” in its name aligns it with Petri’s full-frame flagship line from the same year, the Petri 7rangefinder.

Launch Price: At release, it retailed in Japan for 8,800 yen (roughly $25 USD at the time).

Film Format: Standard 35mm film, exposing 18 × 24 mm half-frames(Vertical/Portrait orientation by default).

Frame Yield: Doubles standard roll capacities; yields 72 exposures on a 36-exposure roll.

Lens: Petri 28mm f/2.8 coated lens (Tessar-type formula, 4 elements).
Shutter: Petri S programmed leaf shutter.

Shutter Speeds: Bulb (B), and automatic speeds running from 1/15s to 1/250s.

ISO/ASA Range: Supports film speeds from ISO 10 to 200.
Weight
Approximately 440 grams.

Unique Mechanical & Design Facts:

The “Circle-Eye” Meter: The camera utilizes a circular selenium cell array that completely surrounds the front element of the lens. This design ensures that if a filter is screwed onto the lens, the meter automatically compensates for the reduced light.

Zero Batteries Required: The selenium meter generates its own micro-electricity from ambient light to power the exposure system and the viewfinder needle. It is entirely mechanical and completely independent of external batteries.

Novelty Bottom-Winder: Unlike most half-frame cameras that use a thumbwheel on the back, the Half 7 uses a large circular winding knob located on the bottom-back edge of the body.

Welcome back to another Full Circle Camera of the Week!
This week’s camera is the Canon AutoFocus AF35M

This was the world’s first Lens-Shutter 35mm autofocus camera at the time. It used a triangulation system with a near-infrared emitting diode (IRED).

The active AF system had the IRED emit a near-infrared beam so its reflection was received by a pin photo diode.

When the shutter button is pressed halfway, the IRED emits a near-infrared beam on the subject. The beam reflected by the subject was received by the pin photo diode. A triangulation was thereby created in the same way as with an optical coincidence rangefinder. The lens draw is adjusted automatically to match the subject distance for focusing. The near-infrared beam also enabled focusing under low-light conditions, making the camera a hit product. The name “Autoboy” became synonymous with AF compact cameras.

helped pioneer the fully automatic “point-and-shoot” era by combining autofocus, auto-exposure, motorized film advance, and a built-in flash into one easy-to-use body.

Why we like it: We chose this camera because It is historically significant for being the world’s first lens-shutter camera to feature a built-in active infrared autofocus system.

Date: it was released in November, 1979

Key features:
Lens: Features a sharp, moderately fast 38mm f/2.8 prime lens (4 elements in 4 groups).
Built-in Flash: Pop-up flash with an orange ready-light indicator. Ideal for low-light situations.
Exposure System: Programmed electronic shutter and automatic exposure (AE) with an EV range of 6 to 17.
Other Features: Includes an electronic self-timer, a 48mm front filter thread, and a visual film-transport indicator on the back.

What kind of film it uses: The Canon AF35M takes standard 35mm film (both color and black-and-white). It accommodates film speeds ranging from ISO 25 to 400.
