We’re nearing the 3-year anniversary of @fullcirclebrooklyn , and the opening of @fullcircleharlem is imminent. It seems like a fitting time to revisit the values that are the foundation of Full Circle. Yes, we offer pole dancing classes, but it’s really about bringing more of these values into the world.

I started pole dancing over 12 years ago at a stripper-owned studio in Portland, OR. I was young, sheltered, disconnected from my desires, wanting a creative outlet, insecure in myself, and lonely in a new city. Pole dancing for me has been a long journey towards finding these values for myself - Connection, Creativity, and Compassion.

It’s going to bring something different to everybody that tries it, but at least at full circle I know that every one of our instructors embodies these values in different ways, and I am so thankful for everyone who has taught inside the studio walls.

Full Circle Values

Although Full Circle offers pole dancing classes, the studios and their offerings are primarily a vehicle for the values we want to see embodied more in this world. Our goal is that this space offers all who participate in it increased access to connection, creativity, and compassion. We’re grateful to have inherited the artform of pole dance from the strippers who created it and are honored we get to share it in all its power and evolution with our community.

Connection

Any type of movement can be a powerful tool for connecting to oneself. The unique challenges and opportunities that pole presents make it an especially potent way to connect to your strengths, softnesses, fears, and abilities in ways that encourage growth. By making the studio a non-competitive environment, pole also becomes an amazing way of connecting with others. In this space we cheer each other on, and recognize that there is no singular way to pole dance. By celebrating our differences we can connect more deeply as a community.

“This month @fullcircleharlem, we celebrated two special milestones for the Full Circle community at our Anniversary Social. Our founding studio, @fullcirclebrooklyn turned 5 years old, and the Harlem studio turned 2 years old! We laughed, ate great food, walked down memory lane, and of course, we danced! Thank you to every single person who has walked through our doors, whether only for a few times or for the last few years. We never could have imagined how big our Full Circle community would grow, and that is truly because of you all!

A special thank you to all the businesses who also helped make this event extra special! Our celebration would not have been the same without the great prizes, food, special discounts, and recovery station provided by the local businesses that showed so much love to our Full Circle community! @ofrendayogastudio @theharlemmethod @harlemkettlebellclub @echands4health @juiceryharlem @liquidmotionct @stressknotnyc 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

Cheers to hopefully many more years dancing with you all!” -@marissamovements

🌪️🌪️ Static rotation🌪️🌪️

To a civilian this combination of words, probably makes no sense, but to a pole dancer, it is the the goal.

There are a lot of things that are happening with static rotation, but I truly believe once you understand, it actually makes PoleDancing easier.

These three videos are things that I have been working on with student students in my new “Static Pole #” class @fullcircleharlem that meets every Thursday at 4:30 PM at the Harlem location.

One of the most difficult things about understanding static rotation is the consistent body orientation change. In order to continue in one direction whether it’s clockwise or counterclockwise for the most part, the body needs to change. It’s orientation every 180° Ish. Understanding when forward becomes backwards. We can start to understand this idea in other movement like a basic back hook spin by simply changing your exit position.
🤔
But there is another element to static rotation, and that is when you switch the direction . 🤔
meaning you are rotating clockwise, and instead of creating the body orientation change, you decide to change the direction.

🌪️This is also a skill that is important and significantly more difficult.. 🌪️

Switching directions usually require requires more strength, more energy, and more understanding of technique.

👀CAN YOU SEE IT? 👀

Take 90 seconds to watch this video … can you recognize where there’s a body orientation change versus a direction change?
If these concepts seem interesting to you then join me every Thursday at 4:30.

and obviously it is ideas are taught in the Liquid Motion Pole certification if you really want a deep dive into your PoleDancing.

and when you do start a rotation, you absolutely need to have the right type of clothing you need skin and you need stuff that stays in place. You need fabric that can withstand pulling twisting and turning, and there’s only one brand I know that can do that! @sway_movewear @liquidmotionct @sway_movewear #jenijanover #getliquid #staticpole #liquidmotionpole by @fullcircleharlem

#pdputsideleghang is a foundational technique in pole - once you’re inverting this position is a starting point for so many moves! Way too many for me to name here…
Understanding the physics of a move gives you the blueprint to perform better. Does it mean you’ll instantly get it? No. But in the journey to organize all your parts at the right time to perform a complex movement on an apparatus, being able to identify *when* and *where* you’re missing an action or engagement gives you the map to succeed. But also - for most beginners, your inside leg is what’s actually messing you up 😁

I’m teaching a 1.5 level series @fullcircleharlem in October Fridays at 12:30p - come learn all these things and more in person, from a real human. 😁

@maddafestation is subbing Heels Fluidity Open Level this Wednesday 12:30pm @fullcircleharlem

In this class, you will explore the shapes & lines you can create using your heels. The class is focused on fluidity, with sensual and wavy movements. The class will combine basework, low flow moves, and heel techniques that will allow you to build and refine your movements. Sandals are highly recommended over boots, and socks or legwarmers may be preferred at times.

Prerequisite: knowledge of basic pole grips (true, forearm, ballerina/twisted split grip), basic pole shapes (sit and spins), pole climb, foundational floor work moves (pirouettes, dips)

Requirements: 7 or 8 inch Sandals (no “D” shaped heels); socks.

Come take class 👠
