🚨 FATAL THREE-VEHICLE CRASH | SOUTH CHARLOTTE

On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at approximately 10:42 a.m., Charlotte Fire Department, Mecklenburg County EMS & Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded to a motor vehicle accident with injuries in the 2800 block of Pineville-Matthews Road near the Arboretum Shopping Center.

CMPD Officers arrived to find three vehicles involved, a Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Pathfinder, and Infiniti G37.

According to CMPD's preliminary investigation, the Hyundai Tucson was making a left turn across Pineville-Matthews Road when it was struck by the Nissan Pathfinder. Following the initial collision, the Nissan struck an Infiniti G37 that was waiting to cross the roadway.

The driver of the Hyundai, 75-year-old Linda Ross, was transported by MEDIC to Novant Presbyterian Medical Center with serious injuries, where she was later pronounced deceased.

The Nissan's driver and five passengers were transported with minor injuries to Atrium CMC, while the driver of the Infiniti was not injured.

CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Search responded to investigate. Investigators say it is currently unknown whether speed or medical conditions contributed to the crash.

I am immensely honored to have my work featured as the cover shot for the North Carolina Edition of Fire News - October/November 2026 issue! It is always a privilege to earn a cover placement, but this milestone carries a unique significance for me.

To say this past year has been challenging following my spinal fusion surgery last year would be a massive understatement. The recovery has been undeniably rough, and things have gone both wrong and right along the way. However, achieving another cover milestone makes the entire struggle profoundly worth it and serves as a powerful reminder of why I kept pushing forward.

I want to deeply thank the Chiefs and Firefighters on scene whose support, conversation, and encouragement over this past year kept my spirits up and kept me moving. I can still close my eyes and picture that day. I went to school that Tuesday morning under a clear blue sky and came home to watch WABC-TV Eyewitness News as everything unfolded.

At 11 years old, I don't think I truly understood what I was seeing.

Then my mom brought my younger brother and me outside. My dad came over, and the four of us sat together.

My mom told us Aunt Renee, my dad's sister, had been on Flight 11.

𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆.

I cried uncontrollably after we were told. I don't remember much about what happened afterward.

I just remember all of us crying.

𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟭 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝟮,𝟵𝟳𝟳 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀. 𝗜𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿.

Renee was a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, an aunt and so much more.

My cousin Matt was only 8 years old when he lost his mom that day. Matt, I hope you know how often I think about you and your dad, and how proud I am to call you my cousin.

𝗔𝘁 𝟭𝟰, 𝗜 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗝𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗷𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿.

At 18, I became a full member of the department.

I responded whenever the pager went off — during the day, in the middle of the night or on weekends.

I've always wondered whether what happened to my family on September 11 played a part in why I chose the fire service.

During my time as a firefighter, I also served with Port Jefferson EMS and regularly rode the ambulance overnight, serving my community.

𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘀 from yesterday’s @charlottefire 𝟮-𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 in Charlotte, NC in @lightningalley24 “Still Alarm” area.

The 𝗘𝗫𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗧 was deceiving, especially with a small breeze, but it really took a toll on everyone working the scene. Kudos to the IC for striking the 2nd Alarm to bring in additional personnel and to @mecklenburgems for adding resources, including their Mass Casualty Evacuation Transport Bus (702).

A lot goes on behind the scenes at incidents like this, and these are some of the people who helped keep things moving.

On Thursday, September 3, 2026, at approximately 3:20 p.m., the Charlotte Fire Department, along with automatic aid from the Pineville Fire Department, responded to a reported house fire at 8437 Tifton Rd.

Multiple 911 calls received by Charlotte Fire Alarm Communications reported a kitchen fire inside the home, prompting the automatic declaration of a Working Fire assignment.

Charlotte Engine 24-C Shift arrived to find fire showing from the side of a one-story, single-family dwelling. Pineville FD Engine 1 arrived shortly afterward, secured a hydrant and went to work alongside Charlotte Ladder 32 conducting vertical ventilation. Engine 32 stretched a second hoseline to assist Engine 24 with the fire attack.

Under the command of Charlotte Fire Department Battalion Chief Derek Parks, firefighters mounted an aggressive attack while operating in extremely hot and humid conditions. Due to the extreme and dangerous heat and the need for additional personnel, a second alarm was struck to bring additional manpower to the scene.

Mecklenburg County EMS responded with a supervisor, two ambulances and the Mass Casualty Bus to provide firefighter rehabilitation, hydration and cooling during the incident.

The fire was brought under control in approximately 25 minutes. No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation by the Charlotte Fire Department Investigation Task Force.

🚒🏗️ 𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗨𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 | 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗧 𝗠𝗜𝗟𝗟 𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗦 𝗚𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗 𝗢𝗡 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 #𝟯

On 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟳, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, the Fort Mill Fire Department and Town of Fort Mill broke ground on the new Fire Station 3 in 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹, 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗮.

During the ceremony, Fire Chief 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 emphasized that better distribution of firefighters and EMTs across the Town will help reduce emergency response times when every second counts. He also reflected on a project years in the making, made possible through the support and cooperation of the Town and its community partners.

Mayor 𝗚𝘂𝘆𝗻𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗴𝗲 recognized Wilkerson’s leadership and thanked Town Council and staff for helping move the project forward.

The approximately 𝟭𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬-𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗲-𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁, single-story Station 3 will mirror the design of Station 2 and be built at 1655 Mason Bend Drive.

Station 3 will initially house 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀/𝗘𝗠𝗧𝘀, with room for up to eight personnel as staffing grows. Its two bays can accommodate 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀. The station will also house water rescue equipment, offices, bedrooms and a kitchen, along with built-in capabilities for 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱-𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.

The station was designed by ADW Architects and is being constructed by Leitner Construction, with completion expected in 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳.

Drone footage shows the aftermath of a camper fire near East Independence Blvd in Matthews on Sunday afternoon, August 23, 2026.

Stallings Fire Department arrived to find a fully involved camper in a power-line right-of-way. The fire was brought under control in approximately 10 minutes with assistance from Matthews Fire & EMS.

The cause remained under investigation.

On Sunday, August 23, 2026, at approximately 4:17 p.m., the Stallings Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire near Matthews-Indian Trail Road and Marie Garris Drive, with Matthews Fire & EMS providing an engine as automatic aid.

Additional 911 callers reported that a generator had exploded next to a camper near the rear of the Scott Clark Toyota dealership off East Independence Blvd.

Stallings Engine 201 arrived on scene and found a fully involved camper within the power-line right-of-way adjacent to the dead end of CPCC Lane. Engine 201 stretched an initial attack line while Matthews Engine 12 established a water supply.

During the incident, it was determined that the fire was located in Mecklenburg County. Due to the nature of the incident, a Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal was requested to the scene.

The fire was extinguished and brought under control in approximately 10 minutes. The cause of the fire is under investigation and not known at time of post.

I never know what kind of moment I'll witness when I leave the house with a camera.

Sometimes it's a working fire.
Sometimes it's a firefighter sharing a quiet moment.
Sometimes it's a rescue, a training exercise, a ceremony, or a community coming together.

These are just a few of the moments I've been fortunate enough to document over the years.
