We had one visitor in several times over the course of the installation and received a lovely message and video from her today (shared with permission). Many thanks to this family, and all the families who called in over the last two weeks! ❤️🪾

‘My little girl said goodbye to Funeral for Ashes today, she told me it said bye back to her 🥺. She loved it so much and we spent hours in there over the past few weeks.

Amazing to see the changes you made, a fresh experience every time. Also, spending hours in there it was incredible to see the calming effect that it had on people, in particular children and people with alternative educational needs.’

Go raibh maith agaibh 🙏

Funeral for Ashes has had 14,000 people come through the doors since launching.

Listed in RTÉ in GIAF CEO John Crumlish’s top 7 picks for the festival as well as in the top 3 by This Is Galway, the installation has been both an adventure and a journey for us.

We cannot thank enough all the people who made it happen, from everyone at GIAF, to the attendees who blessed us with their presence and explored the interactive artwork together by moving through the space or simply soaking up the soundscape and visuals.

We are live for one more day, Sunday the 27th of July from 11 AM until 6 PM in the Printworks.

Go raibh míle, míle maith agaibh.

Such an honour to have performance artists and somatic dancers Michelle, Bernadette, and Cecile on site to explore Funeral for Ashes last night during the New Moon.

Michelle invited these dancers to experiment with the balance between movement, stillness, breath, and touch and explore ecological and cultural rituals.

With over 45 minutes of beautiful footage, we’ll be posting several more clips including audio interviews from these performers over the coming days.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Funeral For Ashes - Printworks - Market St - 11am - 6pm - Free Admission

Ireland’s woodland future needs more than policies—it needs people. These organisations offer rich opportunities for hands-on engagement:

Volunteer for planting days with groups like Native Woodland Trust and Reforest Nation—whether you have green thumbs or just green ideals.

Adopt a tree or support monthly memberships to fund rewilding projects and restoration efforts.

Take part in citizen science, like Teagasc's “Report a Healthy Ash Tree” initiative, to help researchers identify disease-resistant ash trees.

Attend guided walks, workshops, and community events through bodies like Crann – Trees for Ireland to deepen your knowledge and connection.

Share your passion, online or off—many of these organisations welcome storytelling, art, and education as vital parts of advocacy. by @funeral_for_ashes

Ash dieback is decimating Ireland’s native ash population, with mortality rates nearing 100% in some areas.

Ash is one of Ireland’s ‘noble trees’, deeply rooted in folklore, sport (hurleys), and place names.

The impact is being compared to Dutch elm disease, which wiped out elms across Europe.

Ash supports nearly 1,000 species, including insects, birds, and lichens, its loss threatens entire ecosystems.

Even-aged plantations are particularly at risk highlighting the need for mixed-species, resilient forestry.

Scientific & Genetic Solutions.

AshForFuture Project: Led by Teagasc, this initiative is breeding disease-tolerant ash genotypes using genomic selection and micropropagation techniques.

Gene Banks: Over 200 genotypes from 15 European countries are being preserved to maintain genetic diversity.

Field Trials: Irish ash trees are being tested in high-pressure environments (like Lithuania) to identify those with natural resistance.

Financial Support & Replanting.

Ash Dieback Action Plan: Offers up to €5,000/ha under the Climate Action Performance Payment (CAPP) scheme.

Reconstitution Scheme (RADS 2023–2027): Covers costs for site clearance and replanting, with enhanced grant rates depending on forest type.

Premium Top-Ups: Forest owners still receiving premiums get additional payments to match new forest type rates.

Citizen Science & Public Engagement.

Report a Healthy Ash Tree: A nationwide initiative inviting the public to help identify naturally resistant trees.

Community Outreach: Farmers, landowners, and artists are being engaged to raise awareness and preserve cultural ties to ash trees.
