POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
It’s a brisk, somber Friday here in Bend. I’m reminded of being woken up as a 10 year old back in Colorado in 1999, being told school was canceled because of a school shooting. Thinking back, it must have felt like a once in a lifetime event, something we couldn’t imagine happening again. Here we are, 27 years later, still living in a world plagued by the same horrific violence.

It’s hard to write a post about a beer release on a day like today, but the name feels quite fitting, albeit unintentionally. It’s just beer, so call it what you want. The real reason we’re here is to provide a place for our community to gather, grieve, celebrate, reunite, remember, or simply sit with their thoughts.

Public houses and breweries have historically served as places of refuge for their communities, even when people don’t feel like socializing. Sometimes, just being around one another is a reminder that we aren’t alone in this crazy world.

Thankfully, Bend is full of places like this and our community is really rallying. I hope everyone can find a little solace today, take a deep breath of that beautiful, crisp Central Oregon air, and remember that we’re here for one another.

FRESH PEPPER SEASON IS HERE

We decided to ring in Halloween a little early this year and release something spectral using the beautiful fresh White Ghost Peppers our friends at @pepper.wizards sent us 👻

Little back story on our obsession with peppers…

Years ago, Danielle and I had a 4ft tall Reaper plant growing in our tiny 10th story apartment that survived in our window for nearly 2 years. All the while producing tiny little reaper peppers we’d pluck and add to things like guac, hummus and eventually a hazy IPA I made as a young home brewer.

There’s two misconceptions here at Funky Fauna. One, we don’t like IPAs, definitely not true. Two, this beer has ghost/reapers in it so it’s a gimmick and going to funk up my day. Also not true.

If there’s a prime example of both our dedication to making an awesome IPA while keeping with our passion for doing things a little 🌀 different, it’s this beer right here.

𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐔𝐋𝚰𝐔𝐒

𝚠/ 𝙵𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚑 𝚆𝚑𝚒𝚝𝚎 𝙶𝚑𝚘𝚜𝚝 𝙿𝚎𝚙𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚜
𝟼.𝟶%

Double dry hopped with Krush, Citra, Mosaic Lupomax and NZ Nelson Sauvin, with heaps of flaked oats and local raw wheat. Juicy apricot with bright citrus notes from the Nelson, and just a tiny little tickle of warmth from the peppers after a few sips. It’s cozy as hell.

We aren’t reinventing the wheel here, as they say, sweet and spicy belong together like creaky floor boards and haunted houses.

Draft & cans today!

Oregon distro through @dayonepdx

Hail yeah!

𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐘 — 𝓨𝓮𝓪𝓻 𝓕𝓲𝓿𝓮

This year, we had the privilege of working with Gene over at @pepper.wizards in Blountville, Tennessee, to source 12 lbs of fresh Ghost and Reaper Peppers for our Fifth Annual Spookiversary releases this Halloween.

If you’ve had our fresh pepper beers before, then you know we take the utmost pride in sourcing our peppers FRESH, making sure the beer highlights the subtle fruitiness of super hot peppers while remaining vibrant and drinkable. We leave them in the beer just long enough, usually only a few minutes, before pulling them for our annual Spookiversary hot sauce.

THAT BEING SAID…we asked Gene to throw in an extra 500 Carolina Reapers for an additional release this year that shall not be for the faint of heart…

Details to come as we creep closer to Halloween 👻

Make sure to grab your towel and please…

Lil update from Danielle and I 🖤

When it rains, it pours, they say. Which it’s been raining all week and honestly, it’s been a pretty lovely way to kick off September alongside all our fresh hop and HIGHLY sought after pumpkin beers ;)

It’s our favorite time of year, and we’ve been hustling non stop trying to get all the fall beers out while planning a looming marathon of events leading up to our 5th Annual Spookiversary on Halloween. It’s going to be a hail of a time here in the taproom over the next couple months!

We definitely ran ourselves to E this week, both mentally and physically.

As small business owners, you end up doing almost everything yourself. Our mottos have always been “keep pushing!” and “drink more coffee!” Welp…turns out that can also lead to exhaustion, depression, and making dumb, costly mistakes.

For example, last night, after working 14 hours on the canning line and trying to squeeze in a brew, I ended the night by dumping the entire batch I had spent all day brewing.

I made the costly mistake of not realizing my kettle was still on while transferring, something I’ve honestly never heard of anyone doing before, and ended up scorching the entire batch.

$1,000 worth of ingredients…gone. All because I thought I could keep pushing.

We enjoy sharing this stuff because we know we’re not alone. We genuinely believe that being vulnerable about the hard stuff can help other people make sense of their own days, their own mistakes, and the fact that we’re all just human.

All that being said, we are unfortunately short staffed this Sunday, so we’ve decided to close and take the day off.

It’s our favorite time of year, and starting it off stressed out, exhausted, and making dumb mistakes sounds scarier than a Jack O’ Lantern filled corn maze.

So come check us out today & Saturday! We’ve got TWO pumpkin beers, THREE fresh hop beers, and the spookiest vibes this side of the Cascades.

We appreciate every single one of you. Take care of your mental health and well being. You’re not alone!

Hail yeah to that🖤

Back in late July, Funky Fauna from Bend, Oregon made its first-ever draft appearance in China, bringing with it a wide range of beers built around wild yeast, local Oregon ingredients, and natural fermentation.

Their beers are often modest in alcohol, but never short on character. Fruit, herbs, wood, subtle funk, and bright acidity unfold gradually through dry, expressive bodies.

For this first draft release, we brought in 12 different beers.

The lineup ranged from fruited wild saisons brewed with cherries, raspberries, blackberries, grapes, and peaches, to West Coast saisons layered with juniper, hops, and forest-like aromatics. It also included a Rustic Lager made with 100% Oregon ingredients, as well as a West Coast Pilsner dry-hopped with Simcoe, Superdelic, and Nelson Sauvin Amplifier Oil.

A few highlights from the release:

🦌 Haunted Hallow
Brewed with Oregon cherries and lime peel. Light, dry, and bright, with fruit, citrus, and natural fermentation character woven together.

🌙 Moon Without a Tide
Made with blackberry and hibiscus, bringing layers of dark fruit, floral notes, and a gentle touch of acidity.

🐺 If a Wolf Could Smile
Dry-hopped with Simcoe, Superdelic, and Nelson Sauvin Amplifier Oil, delivering citrus, tropical fruit, herbal tones, and a crisp finish.

🌾 Time Out of Mind
A Rustic Lager brewed entirely with Oregon-grown grains, cold-fermented and left unfiltered to preserve its grain-driven, rural character.

The draft lineup has since been pouring across multiple cities in China.

From forests and orchards to native microflora, Funky Fauna brought a distinctly Oregon sense of place across the Pacific.

Now that we’re already in September, this late-July arrival feels like the beginning of something much bigger.

Sometimes, most times, it’s damn near impossible to simultaneously do my job and document it for the social medias, not that y’all need another video of hops being harvested so long story short here’s what we’ve got goin on!

Just got back from grabbing fresh @indiehops STRATA from the wonderful Gayle Goschie @goschiefarms where I was lucky to spend some time chatting with her a bit about the state of Oregon agriculture, barley, and of course hops. While I was there I also got some fresh bags of the barley they grew this year that was floor malted by @admiralmaltings . This is the only Oregon grown barley I can get my hands on right now and I’m very thankful and excited to see how Admirals floor malting tastes in our next batch of rustic lager.

The Strata we picked up will go into this years GLEE OF 1000 OTTERS, which beat out some double IPAs in last years fresh hop Best of Craft Beer Awards taking home a bronze medal ;)

Also grabbed some fresh SIMCOE from @colemanagriculture that will go into another fresh hop WEST COAST SAISON called ETERNAL RETURN in collaboration with @thebeermongers in Portland. They are the best :)

Finally, I swung by @tinygiantsbrewing to hang out with our dear friends Steve, Yessica & Princess as they will soon be releasing our annual fresh hop collab SHAPE SHIFTING WIZARD. We’ll definitely be snagging a keg for a guest tap 🖤

Ok that’s all, I gotta get these hops onto Saison!

Hail yeah!

Oh, and PENTAPUMPKIN releases next week 🎃

Anyone catch the moon the other night?! Spooky as hell 🌙

The world’s bat shit crazy, and it’s always the little things that remind us how truly special it is to be anything at all.

I know pumpkin-whatever gets a bad rep and the heaviest of eye rolls this time of year… but for us, this simple blend of warming spices, albeit obviously still summer, reminds us of impending cooler days, colorful leaves and cozy strolls through the park in your favorite jacket. If pumpkin beer doesn’t fit into the ethos of SAISON, then color me a pumpkin-headed spooky muffin.

Our OG Pumpkin Ale, PENTAPUMPKIN, will be out in a couple weeks, but for now we brought back an old favorite to help us ring in the seasonal CREEP of fall 🎃🍂👻

Draft and cans in the taproom, with distro through @dayonepdx next week 🖤

ALL HAIL PUMPKIN ALE!

Yooo Bend! Hail yeah, thank you!!

Sea Plague started as a collab a few years ago with our friends @sunrift_pdx up in Portland, who graced our OG taproom in Sisters with probably the doomiest metal ever played in town. Since then, it’s garnered a cult following and, dare I say, turned into a bit of a flagship?? Oh no… we’re gonna need a lot of seaweed & wasabi, @oregoncoastwasabi !

Anyway, I’ll try not to wax too poetic here, but this one feels different. It’s straight from you. The people! Our town that we’re so stoked to call home. We don’t promote for stuff like this, so it’s really special that you all took the time to vote for us, and for such a cool beer that holds a beautifully dark place in our hearts 🖤

We literally canned a fresh batch of SEA PLAGUE this week, but you know our beer takes time, so it should be ready late next week ish. Here’s a sneak peak of the cans, we’ll keep you posted!

And hey, maybe if everyone blows up their instagram/spotify we can convince @sunrift_pdx to crawl out of hibernation and come play a reunion show…

Hail yeah, love you Bend 🖤
