This World Performance Week, we found ourselves rethinking what “performance” can look and feel like.

With our youngest learners, sensory theatre became something to touch, move through, build, share, play, and even a space to pause and find calm.

Fabric turned into flowing landscapes of colour and sensation, boxes transformed into an imaginary land, and stories unfolded not from scripts, but from play.

As advocates of play based learning, we witnessed how a participatory, sensory exploration, and collective storytelling can lead to student agency. Each child engaged in their own ways, contributing to a larger experience that belonged to everyone in the room.

In our work with children with diverse needs, we noticed that open-ended exploration when thoughtfully facilitated naturally supports sensory integration, motor planning, and emotional regulation.

This time, we celebrate theatre not just as a form, but as an experience and a feeling that invites us to listen, to notice, and to create together. @gatewayschoolofmumbai #sensorytheatre #openendedplay #participatorytales #theatreforchildrenbychildren #assitejindia taken in The Gateway School of Mumbai by @funnyfarhan
