Berlinde De Bruyckere is among the few contemporary artists able to enter into a compelling dialogue with Michelangelo. Her sustained inquiry into the body, deep engagement with art history, and understanding of art as a space for confronting human vulnerability and limitation find a powerful resonance in this pairing.

Those last precious moments before the delegation wearing the historical colours of your Contrada sets off to mark the beginning of the parade, standing at the doorstep of the very place where, as a child, you played while dreaming of worlds, possibilities and achievements.

The gaze is fixed, fierce with concentration. The responsibility of representing generations of Istriciaioli — members of the Contrada dell’Istrice — is daunting. And yet, above all sentiments, the honour and privilege prevail.

Palio. Siena. And the glorious Contrada Sovrana dell’Istrice, where I was born.

All of that, and so much more, is captured in these intimate moments before the official parade, as the final touches are made.

Under the stands (“sotto i palchi”), just like when we were kids, with Duccio.

The unexpected rain gave us a new perspective: dinner, conversations and memories, while waiting for the August Palio—which, like the one in July, is keeping us waiting.

“Under the stands” is also a childhood perspective: looking out into the Piazza through the legs of the adults, trying to catch a glimpse of the trial races and, if we were lucky, even the Palio itself.

A child’s view of one of Siena’s most iconic traditions. And, for one evening, a perspective we found ourselves sharing again. #perspective #memories #palio #siena #friendships @lorenzofusiguide @ducciomeiattini taken in Piazza del Campo by @fusi_l
