My dear friend @viktoriabank.fotografi is not only one of the kindest people you’ll meet but also a freaken dope and extremely hardworking photographer. Together, for one of her projects we took these stunning photo’s and gave @monki content they didn’t know they needed (you’re welcome).

Thank you Viktoria for capturing ME. These photographs are timeless and really do celebrate the artist that I am but also the one I aspire to be 🌸🌸🌸

In the next post I will be sharing my new website and how these babies fit into my multifaceted practice.

✨ FYI the entire outfit is thrifted (minus the beret which was from monki) taken in Stockholm, Sweden by @future_of_brown

Onde A Luta Termina (Where the Struggle Ends)
2023
Audiovisual on-site installation, 8 min.

In collaboration with sound designer Samar Jabri @samar_jabri , and multimedia designer Nikita Govender @nikita.govender (South Africa)
Commissioned by Röda Sten Konsthall

Situated on the 4th floor

'A Luta Continua' (Portuguese: the struggle continues), is a phrase Tshabalala grew up hearing in 'post'-apartheid South Africa. As a statement, it originates from Mozambique and has been sung by renowned musicians such as Miriam Makeba in solidarity with the liberation struggle throughout Afrika.

Although political freedom was and is being fought for, freedom without terms has still not been granted. Through time travel, the figure seen in the video work has now found herself immersed in the Just Future: a speculative world of justice and freedom as imagined by Afrofuturists. Although it is a singular expression of this utopia, it invites the audience to reimagine and share in the spoils of war; joy, love, rest and peace.

Onde A luta Termina is a multisensory experience that presents itself as a spiritual dialogue/ prayer between the artist's grandma Nomasonto and her ancestors. It exposes Tshabalala's dreams, imagination and hope, and the present that she sees as the gift of being able to create and the will to fight for justice.

Tshabalala hopes you will see yourself in this world and to remember that we will have to fight for it.

If you don’t see yourself here, question why you don't.

We need to take community seriously if we want to built resilient societies. They don’t have to be cool or fancy. Just showing up where there’s a gap, with individuals, your neighbourhood, schools etc. Just show up!

Do you think we value community enough? by @future_of_brown

A rebranding I did for @picatory_studios by @andilemthembu who I once used to shadow when I was in varsity. Look at us now 😎
Time is a beautiful thing.

Thanx for the trust and believing in me all those years back!

Starting a series called Zithande. And it’s a collection of all my thoughts, frustrations and stubbornness to build a world where hope, despair and action live coherently.
We can’t always complain!
We can’t always be quiet and idle!
We can’t always be hopeless.

Refuse to be defeated.

Let’s create better communities TOGETHER 🫶🏾🩷 by @future_of_brown

Big Headed Galz, innit! (2026) (Prt 2)

Inspired by my first trip to Accra where I was immersed in West African mask sculptures, art, British accents from new friends, vibrant textile culture, and party life I’m still having flashbacks of. Month long of bottomless jollof and meeting beautiful men, some of whom reminded me that society has a problem with women who know their worth and can speak their mind.

They don’t like us so they try to shame and shrink us! Me, I celebrate us.

We might as well continue to blow our own horns, shake nyash to our own tunes and try balance these big heads they claim we have 😅 🤝

Had the honour of going to back to UJ to guest lecture the youngins on Branding design for seven weeks. The semester started off with a heap load of nostalgia(struggled to be present while being yanked into the past 😅), and ended with me being very proud of the work my students put together.

Teaching requires a bit out of one but I’m so grateful I have an idea of what it is that I teach. I teach self-cav, self-trust, courage and being present. I think that’s a beautiful thing!

Thank you to my thought partner and 2nd bestie to Tingo, Erica, for giving me space to express some challenges faced as well as my observations and reflections. Stories from your own experience were invaluable.

Anyway you can all call me madam professsssoooRRRRR!!!! taken in University of Johannesburg,Bunting Road by @future_of_brown

Cant believe it’s been almost 5months since I adopted Tingo-Lingo 🌈. Thank you for teaching me so much about cats, parenting, softness, goofiness, lint rollers, the price of cat food and its section at the grocery store, overcoming fear, respecting boundaries, taking life seriously and most importantly, love! 🩷

Because of you, I believe everyone should adopt a cat bestie! by @future_of_brown

Part of the Self cav journey began when I started wearing big earrings. Always thought they made my ears look massive. Now I don’t even care 🥲💅🏾.

Laser cut and hand painted with lots of love.

I have the disc, half moon, portal and comb designs in stock going for R350 each(excluding courier)(SA only).

We international baby!! 🥳🙌🏾☀️

So proud to be introducing some of the most talented and proactive creatives we have grown to know, to our new @layersofcreativity family in Gothenburg.

An exhibition exploring ‘Welcome home’ as a topic, we wanted to think together with LOC around community building and what it means to create spaces that may feel like home to creatives from all walks of life.

The internet has brought all of us closer to each other and we look forward to sharing the Standerton spirit all the way to the vikings in the north.
