If these walls could talk, they’d probably say: these girls are too much… devastatingly chic… and just a little unwell.

Trapani stole 36 hours from us without asking.

Perched on Sicily’s western coast, it’s one of those places that hasn’t reached the travel guides yet, but has a charm that is unmatched. The kind of European town where you wander without a plan and somehow end up exactly where you’re supposed to be… sitting at a cafe eating gelato.

Our first stop was visiting a coral artisan whose family has preserved a UNESCO-recognized tradition. Then came the slow rituals of travel: trying on jewelry, wandering through the gardens, flipping through vinyl at a neighborhood record place while sipping espresso martinis, lingering over long lunches, chasing gelato between cobblestone streets, and watching the sun set on one of those impossibly rocky Mediterranean beaches.

Palermo felt like stepping into a memory I hadn’t lived yet.

Our first stop in Sicily wasn’t polished or postcard-perfect. It was one of the oldest neighborhoods, tucked away from the tourist crowds, where life carried on without much concern for who was passing through. A few miles from the sea, the city felt gritty, loud, and beautifully alive.

Our apartment sat at the top of an old building overlooking a quiet courtyard. Below us, narrow corridors twisted between tiny jewelry and silver shops that seemed frozen in time. In the afternoon heat we wandered through Chiesa Madre, moving slowly beneath centuries of stone, walking thousands of steps by day. By night, the streets transformed …cars lining every corner, conversations in different languages other than English echoing off balconies, families lingering outside in the fountain squares dancing 💃🏾

Palermo is the second city I’ve visited in Italy, and perhaps the grittiest. But its history is over 2700 years old! At first, it felt almost intimidating. But somewhere between getting lost in its winding cobblestone streets and finishing the best bowl of clam pasta I’ve ever had, I realized not every place is meant to charm you immediately.

Some cities reveal themselves slowly. Palermo was one of them. 🇮🇹🍝✨ by @futurebymelissa
