Read Now: The Declaration of the East Africa Future Generations Tribunal (EAFGT) 📢✊🏾

🔗 futuregenerationstribunal.org/declaration

From October 28th to November 1st, 2025, the East African Future Generations Tribunal (EAFGT) convened in Mombasa, Kenya. It brought together young people and supporting experts from across East Africa to reflect on how the climate crisis is shaping their lives, futures, and rights.

⚖️ 𝗔 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲; this Declaration emerged from the Tribunal through testimony, regional expertise with our partners, and legal analysis, and was shaped through a shared process of listening, debate, and care.

🌿 The work of protecting future generations is not a single moment or document, but a continuing commitment shaped by place, memory, and collective action. In the coming period, stay tuned as we elaborate more on these rights and how to utilise this Declaration.

On behalf of the EAFGT, one generation weaves the next.

The polycrisis we face—climate breakdown, ecological collapse, and human rights violations—demands bold, people-powered solutions. At the Future Generations Tribunal, we’re mobilizing globally to amplify testimonies, hold systems accountable, and secure the rights of future generations.

This Giving Tuesday, your support can make a world of difference:

🌍 Donate to our organization to help us mobilize regionally worldwide in 2024 and boost our small team’s capacity.

🎙️ Donate to the People’s Assembly (happening on the exact date of giving Tuesday) crowdfunding campaign to bring global frontline voices to The Hague.

Link in bio to support both efforts. Let’s shape a just future together.

Warmly,

It’s strange but I think as the political pendulum swings into an era of conservatism, we have gotten really passive with the language we use to talk about climate change. The amount of times I heard “overshoot” or “heat index” at NYCW was significantly more than the fact that the next super el-nino will kill half a million people next year.
I think we’ve also started normalizing climactic disasters. As if someone’s life was just a blip in time, and not an entire ending, not entire loss of memory, of culture of home.
It was my honor to talk about the real consequences at the 4th annual planetary boundary launch with Prossor Johan Rockstrom, President Santos and Mary Robinson, and Nobel prize winning scientist Professor Carlos Nobre. It was also my heartbreak to talk about these stories in a room so far removed from the places I mentioned. But I am greatful for this task.
Through the @futuregenerationstribunal my team and I will continue demarcating these stories. We will continue to insist that they are evidence of loss. We will make sure lives in their fullest are honored and so are the losses. by @futuregenerationstribunal

Speakers announcement ✨

Joining us tomorrow,
@farzanafarukjhumu , the current United Nations Secretary General’s Youth Advisor on Climate Change

@alexia.leclercq , the Founder and Executive Director, Land Justice Community School

@frias_daphne , a Climate justice advocate, storyteller, and disability rights leader

During this event, FGT & our speakers will share insights into possible avenues of methodology behind the Fossil Fuel Tribunal, and create opportunities to identify legal, academic, media, funding, venue, and thought partnerships!

Together, our speakers bring policy, organizing, and public health together in one conversation: what it takes to move fossil fuel accountability from acknowledgment to action, how the industry’s economic roots shape what change is possible, and why any real accountability has to account for who bears the cost first.

Come not just to hear about this work, but to help fund, strengthen, and build it.

How does thinking about Future Generations motivate your organizing for Climate, Migrant and Racial justice today?

FGT was on the ground in Liverpool last week represented by @yomnabdelkader our director of communications attending the Climate, Migrant and Racial Justice Movement-Building Summit 2026 organized by the CMJ group of @climatejustice_coalition, where we had the pleasure of interviewing some of the most inspiring grassroots and nationwide organizers for Climate, Migrant and Racial justice in the UK!

Protecting future generations of humans and more than human means living the politics we seek today, listening to each other, and centring the experiences of womxn of the global south, these were some of the insights shared by organizers from @sds_noborders_noprisons, @blmuk, and @allafricanwomensgroup doing the work on the ground.

✊🏽 Tune in to listen to their answers, and support the work they do.

What does it mean to protect the rights of future generations? 🤔

Fatemah Sultan is a co-founder and Director of Partnerships at @futuregenerationstribunal (FGT) – a youth-led network working to secure the environmental rights of future generations.

We recently had the chance to speak to her about how the organisation came about, the gaps she sees within the conservation landscape, and how FGT is ensuring that youth and the generations to come are represented.

A partner of ours since 2025, FGT brings attention to the outsized impact ecological change is having on young people as the stewards of the future.

Working with large international legal institutions, such as the International Court of Justice – as well as national and local governments – they are creating a database of individual testimonies from those impacted by climate change.

Connecting to values of traditional ecology and Indigenous principles, FGT believes that in the same way that we preserve history for our ancestors, we must preserve the natural world for those who have yet to come.

What does it mean to prevent harm before it happens? Protection from Foreseeable Harm: that is the second Right of Future Generations defined by youth participants on the frontlines of the climate crisis at our East Africa Future Generations Tribunal (EAFGT).

When we have the science, knowledge, and lived experiences proving that harm is preventable, we owe it to future generations of humans and the more than human who will inherit this earth to prevent these harms, especially in the context of the accelerating climate crisis.

🔗 Read more about this community-defined right in the EAFGT Declaration.
