LAURIE ANDERSON JOINS FUTURE LIBRARY
The pioneering artist will create a secret work to remain unread until 2114. Laurie Anderson is a writer, director, composer, visual artist, musician, and vocalist whose groundbreaking work spans art, theater, experimental music, and technology. Anderson will create a new work to be entrusted to Future Library in the forest outside Oslo in 2027. Its form remains entirely open: it could be a text, a story, a score, a set of instructions—or something for which we do not yet have a name. I absolutely loved the idea of the Future Library as soon as I learned about it.

Laurie Anderson: "I’ve always been in love with books, libraries and forests. When I was a kid we lived next to a large park filled with maple, elm and oak trees. At the far corner of the park was an enormous red oak tree and up the street and just around the bend there was the library, a rustic fieldstone building filled with comfortable pillows and many thousands of books.

“You better check with grandfather tree today if you have the time, “my mother would say some mornings. In a house where candy of all kinds was forbidden, we knew what that meant: there would be chocolate bars and chocolate mints up in the fork of the red oak, just low enough for us to hoist ourselves up and grab them. It also meant that we’d have
extra incentive that day to get to the library.

My mother was a brilliant and unhappy woman. She should have been a CEO of a major corporation but instead had eight children. She loved books and somehow made it a project to get up early in the morning, walk through the park and hide chocolate bars in a tree. She taught us to love books, magic, and old trees.

I’m hoping to be able to write something useful about love for the people who will read this in 2114. My favorite books are the ones in which I can hear someone’s voice, which is why I’lltry my best to make myself clear to the people who come across these books in the next century. Laurie Anderson is a counterculture icon, and the artist behind this viral sound. She’s a musician, painter, author — and was just selected to contribute to the @futurelibraryno.

Future Library is a long-term art project by @studio.katie.paterson. It’s a library that won’t open until 02114. All the manuscripts will remain a secret for another 88 years.

More coverage of Future Library is coming in the next issue of Pace Layers, our annual print journal. Stay tuned.

And if you're interested in cool countercultural figures, strange histories, and long-term art projects like this — welcome to the Long Now. We have members around the world, and if you're new here, come get connected to this whole world of long-term thinking. by @futurelibraryno

In the forest outside Oslo, I sat down for a conversation with visionary artist Katie Paterson @studio.katie.paterson about the creative process behind one of the most fascinating art projects I know: Future Library. @futurelibraryno 🌲🌲

Around us, 1,000 trees are growing.

Every year, for 100 years, one writer contributes a manuscript that no one is allowed to read.

In 2114, the trees will be turned into paper, and the manuscripts will finally be published.

I find something incredibly moving about creating for people you will never meet.

About trusting an idea whose completion you will never see.

Katie and I spoke about creativity, imagination, time, and what it takes to make space for ideas that at first might seem impossible.

Perhaps some ideas ask us to dream beyond the limits of our own lifetime 💗 and Katie is doing it so beautifully.

🎥 The full conversation is now on YouTube, filmed right there in the Future Library forest.

📍Future Library. Oslo, Noruega.
@futurelibraryno

In 2017, when King Harald and Queen Sonja turned 80, the City of Oslo gave them a very special gift: six of Katie Paterson’s Future Library Certificates – one for each of the royal couple’s six grandchildren.

Each certificate is an artwork from a limited edition of 1,000. It carries a promise into the future: in 2114, whoever holds the certificate will be entitled to receive one copy of the complete Future Library anthology – containing all 100 manuscripts entrusted to the project over the course of a century, printed on paper made from the trees growing in the Future Library Forest today.

Marianne Borgen, then Mayor of Oslo, presented the gift on behalf of the City of Oslo. The certificates are therefore gifts designed to be passed from one generation to the next, carrying that promise all the way to 2114.

A small but beautiful expression of something at the heart of Future Library: trust in the future, and the connection between those of us living today and those who will come after us.

A very special visit to the Silent Room.

It was a joy to welcome Robert Macfarlane and to spend time together sharing stories about nature, time, responsibility and the futures we may never see.

Robert is this year’s Arne Næss Chair and joined an inspiring conversation on “Risk, Awe and Care: How Encounters with Nature Shape Responsibility and Conservation.”

Together with explorer, publisher and writer Erling Kagge and Benedicte Havn Sivertsen, Head of DNT Ung, the conversation explored how our encounters with the natural world can shape the way we care for it — and our sense of responsibility towards generations yet to come.

The conversation was moderated by Karen Victoria Lykke, Professor at the Centre for Global Sustainability and Programme Director of the Arne Næss Programme.

Future Library is a 100-year artwork unfolding in Oslo. Since 2014, a forest has been growing in Nordmarka, and each year a writer has entrusted an unread manuscript to the project. Together, these works will remain sealed until 2114.

Built on trust, patience and a belief in future generations, Future Library depends on a continuous chain of care. We invite you to become part of that chain. Your support helps sustain the long-term stewardship of the artwork, commissioning future authors, supporting cultural programming, and ensuring that the artwork can endure for generations to come.

Future Library has had the great privilege of collaborating with the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the Edinburgh Futures Institute and the Norwegian Consulate for the past four years. Each year, we present a unique event at the festival and, whenever possible, announce the next author selected for Future Library.

This year, we welcomed Elif Shafak and Valeria Luiselli as our guests and announced Laurie Anderson as Future Library’s thirteenth author.

The Norwegian Consulate hosts an annual reception led by Honorary Consul General Professor Julian Jones. The Lord Provost of Edinburgh is also often in attendance, as was the case this year.

The passing of His Majesty King Harald was marked by the Honorary Consul General with a moment of silence. Future Library Trust Chair Anne Beate Hovind also delivered a speech shaped by the circumstances of the day.
