“Imagine a pitch that starts with, ‘This is going to take 100 years.’ And then, ‘We’ll also need a forest.’ And on top of that, ‘We’ll also need famous writers.’”

That’s how @abhovind described the moment she first heard of Long Now Council member @studio.katie.paterson's idea for @futurelibraryno, a century-long artwork that grows a forest to print a library of future books that will remain sealed and unread until 02114.

This is the story of how that vision was made real, and what it will take to keep it alive. Read it online at the link in bio.

Or read it in print in Pace Layers 02026 – 02027, the third issue of Long Now's annual print journal, publishing November 5. Preorder and subscribe at the link in our bio.

“Scottish artist Katie Paterson has created a one hundred year artwork Future Library “Framtidsbiblioteket” for the city of Oslo in Norway.
One thousand trees have been planted in Nordmarka, a forest just outside Oslo, which will supply paper for a special anthology of books to be printed in one hundred years’ time. Between now and then, one writer every year will contribute a text, with the writings held in trust, unpublished, until the year 2114. Tending the forest and ensuring its preservation for the one hundred year duration of the artwork finds a conceptual counterpoint in the invitation extended to each writer: to conceive and produce a work in the hope of finding a receptive reader in an unknown future.

“Future Library is a living, breathing, organic artwork, unfolding over one hundred years. It will live and breathe through the material growth of the trees — I imagine the tree rings as chapters in a book. The unwritten words, year by year, activated, materialized. The visitor’s experience of being in the forest, changing over decades, being aware of the slow growth of the trees containing the writers’ ideas like an unseen energy.”

The manuscripts are being held in trust in a specially designed room in the new public library Deichman Bjørvika. Intended to be a space of contemplation, this room is lined with wood from the forest. The authors’ names will be on display, but none of the manuscripts will be available for reading – until their publication in one century’s time.”

In the forest outside Oslo, I sat down for a conversation with visionary artist Katie Paterson @studio.katie.paterson about the creative process behind one of the most fascinating art projects I know: Future Library. @futurelibraryno 🌲🌲

Around us, 1,000 trees are growing.

Every year, for 100 years, one writer contributes a manuscript that no one is allowed to read.

In 2114, the trees will be turned into paper, and the manuscripts will finally be published.

I find something incredibly moving about creating for people you will never meet.

About trusting an idea whose completion you will never see.

Katie and I spoke about creativity, imagination, time, and what it takes to make space for ideas that at first might seem impossible.

Perhaps some ideas ask us to dream beyond the limits of our own lifetime 💗 and Katie is doing it so beautifully.

🎥 The full conversation is now on YouTube, filmed right there in the Future Library forest.

📍Future Library. Oslo, Noruega.
@futurelibraryno

A book written today for a reader in 2114. 📖

The Future Library in Oslo collects an unpublished work from a writer each year, creating a literary time capsule for generations yet to come. 📚

What would you put in the Future Library? 💭

2017 yılında The Last Taboo adlı eserini Gelecek Kütüphanesi’ne teslim etti.

Šta ako napišete knjigu koju niko neće pročitati sve do 2114. godine?

Rukopisi danas stoje zaključani u Tihoj sobi biblioteke Deichman u Oslu. Niko ih ne može pročitati. Ne još. 🔗 in bio!

Laurie Anderson is a counterculture icon, and the artist behind this viral sound. She’s a musician, painter, author — and was just selected to contribute to the @futurelibraryno.

Future Library is a long-term art project by @studio.katie.paterson. It’s a library that won’t open until 02114. All the manuscripts will remain a secret for another 88 years.

More coverage of Future Library is coming in the next issue of Pace Layers, our annual print journal. Stay tuned.

And if you're interested in cool countercultural figures, strange histories, and long-term art projects like this — welcome to the Long Now. We have members around the world, and if you're new here, come get connected to this whole world of long-term thinking.
