Can you tell I’m well red?📕💃🏼Incredible night celebrating 100 years of the @schomburgcenter at the @nypl and their critical work in preserving Black history, literature, and culture. I recently did research on Arthur Schomburg as a part of a project on librarian Ernestine Rose and got to see their early minutes + correspondence for purchasing Schomburg’s collection (Which anyone can do with a research appointment at the Schomburg Center!) Seeing the records of acquiring a collection that was built to prove Black history exists made it feel like such a full circle moment; here’s to another 100 years! taken in New York Public Library by @futuresecondwife

Meet your guide, Emily Hupp (@futuresecondwife ), in the lobby of the Schwarzman Building — she'll bring you upstairs into a private room within @nypl 's Manuscripts and Archives Division and walk you through the primary sources that keep jewelry history alive, in the public record and off it. One favorite from her research: a thank-you note collected by Herman Marcus of Marcus & Co., written by a boy he'd met after Marcus gave him a small pin to pass along to a classmate for her birthday. Small, human, and preserved because someone thought to keep it.

On May 21, 1969, my mother made sure history remembered that she fainted during her smallpox vaccination before going abroad. (Later in this same travel journal, she’d write about the moon landing.)

She inspired my love of details, beautiful objects, vintage jewelry, and art- the kind of treasures that carry entire lives within them. Today, on her first birthday not here on Earth with us, I spent the day sharing old photographs, appreciating the details of her objects, enjoying Magnolia cupcakes, discussing Jane Austen with my book club, taking in a gorgeous sunset, and feeling overwhelmingly grateful (All things she would have loved)

I am so lucky to have had her as my mother. Even when the thought of her comes with a twinge of pain, it will always be accompanied by a smile. 💕 by @futuresecondwife
