Yesterday my son Brandon helped me build a toddler mobility trainer (TMT). One of the steps when printing flexible material called Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) is removing the stringy hairs that look like spider webs on the printed parts.

The pushrims for the toddler mobility trainer (TMT) are printed out of TPU and at times produce stringing. Trying to remove the stringing by pulling or cutting it is not efficient. Instead we use a heat gun to sweep over the areas with strings to shrink them down to nothing.

[Video Description: In this video Brandon uses a heat gun to demonstrate how quick sweeps over the stringing on the printed TPU parts shrinks the hairs down to nothing and results in a nice clean part.]

Today is my 31st injury anniversary and I wanted to share some things I learned over the past year.

1. I don’t feel disabled. People in this world with their words and actions make me feel disabled.

2. I’m a professional sitter and I’m damn good at it!

3. Assistive technology is my passion.

4. Getting a colostomy was one of the best decisions I made for quality of life.

5. The disability community is filled with incredible people.

6. The journey is better when you take time to enjoy it and live in the moment.

Yesterday at the Angel City Games my son Brandon got to try out a Dashmoto Mobility Scooter that belonged to TJ Lee. After a brief instruction from TJ, Brandon was cruising around. It’s incredible how fast these mobility devices can go and they are so small and compact. I love how the technology and innovation is evolving in the mobility space.

This past weekend the family drove to Las Vegas to watch Brandon and Andrew compete in the Vegas Cup. Both boys did extremely well. Brandon’s 2012 ECRL team tied for first in their bracket, but unfortunately didn’t advance due to a single goal differential. Andrew’s 2015 Flight 1 team made it to the Final, but lost to a very skilled LAFC squad.

We enjoyed watching the boys compete, but the best part of our trip was getting to have a nice dinner together on the final night of our trip. The boys tried beef carpaccio for the first time and enjoyed fresh pasta, a ribeye steak and a 25 layer chocolate cake.

We sat outside the restaurant and got to not only enjoy great food, but share stories, laughter and watch the Bellagio fountain in the distance. It’s times like these that we realize how blessed we are to create memories with our children.

With two boys in the house there tends to be a lot of clutter. Our dining room table is a popular place to lay anything and everything.

I recently saw a portable ping pong set on Amazon that had a net that expands and attaches to most tables. I instantly thought this would be perfect for our cracked glass dining room table. It would be a great incentive for everyone to keep the table clean so that we could play each other.

After getting the house cleaned the boys tested out the ping pong set and loved it. The best part is I get to enjoy playing the game with them.

Today the Lakewood Lancers 12U Red football team battled against the Long Beach Jackrabbits 12U squad at Laguna Hills High School. The offense established the run attack early in the contest and then went to the passing game. The defense held the potent running game of the Jackrabbits to a minimum and the secondary (@jklm_swanson) came up with two key interceptions to put the game out of reach. I’m proud of the boys for working hard and never letting down. On to the OEC Championship game next Sunday against the Santa Margarita Silver Cowboys 12U team. Go Lancers!

Last Sunday my younger son Andrew wanted to grill some meat on the barbecue for dinner. We went to the store later in the day and he picked out some cuts of meat and some asparagus.

When we got home he seasoned the meat and I preheated our Weber grill in the backyard. Andrew brought out the meat, asparagus and a set of tongs. I brought my Quad Tools reacher and adaptive tongs.

Together we loaded up the grill and cooked the thin cuts of steak. This was one of the first times my son Andrew wanted to grill with me. And it was made possible using the assistive devices from Quad Tools. These are the moments that I cherish the most.

If you struggle with hand dexterity how do you barbecue? Is there a specific grill and/or grilling tool you use to help you barbecue independently? Please share your grilling experiences in the comments below.

Today is the 30th anniversary of my spinal cord injury (SCI). Wow that sounds really weird to say. Where did all of that time go?

This year I struggled with my mental health. I never thought that would be me because living with a spinal cord injury teaches you how to deal with so many unpredictable and uncomfortable situations. You build a tougher skin to handle adversity. But this was something that I could not manage on my own and so I got help.

Once I accepted that my feelings were real and that it wasn’t anything to be ashamed of I was able to build myself back up again.

Living with a spinal cord injury isn’t easy and I’m one of the lucky ones. The SCI life will test you at every turn and knock you down just when you thought you were making progress. However, it’s this life that made me the person that I am today and achieved the life that I always wanted.

I’m at a place now where I can use the past 30 years of my journey to help improve the quality of life for others. I’m truly blessed to have my beautiful family and proud to be part of the disabled community. Life is good!

This morning both boys wanted to go to the gym at our hotel in Phoenix, Arizona. I was surprised given they are on vacation in an unfamiliar place.

Since they started training at Grindathon Athletics they have learned different exercises and gained the confidence to do them on their own. They even work/train together which I thought would never happen. Thank you @grindathonbill @aerybaby and entire the Grindathon Family for your support during this journey.🙌🏻💪🏻🙏🏻
