⭐️New York City friends! 🎥 Condemned: The Toxic Prisons Problem will be screening TOMORROW at New School University Center as a part of @climateweeknyc. This important film exposes the intersections of environmental injustice and incarceration in Pennsylvania and beyond through the stories of people fighting to get toxic prisons shut down.

An engaging discussion with B. Preston Lyles of the Toxic Prisons Campaign, Dr. Margot Brown of @environmental_defense_fund, and Rev. Dr. Chris Kimmenez of @healing_communities_pa will follow the screening.

This film was created by the Toxic Prisons Campaign of @hrcoalition. @waiteandsee and I co-directed the film. And @bpl5874 and I produced it. The film also wouldn’t have been possible without @bonfiremediaco who kicked off the project back in 2023.

We are continuing to put the finishing touches on the film, but we are excited to share it at Climate Week NYC tomorrow. And there will be a Philadelphia screening in October, so stay tuned for that!

BlackStar was everything and more than we could have dreamed!

On Thursday, August 6th, The Seeds We Carry premiered at the 15th annual BlackStar Film Festival in Philadelphia, PA. The film’s reception was outstanding, and we ended the festival winning 2 awards!!! The Philadelphia Filmmaker Award (juried award) and Favorite Short Documentary (audience award) 🏆🏆

The festival was a whirlwind four days filled with film screenings, engaging conversations, networking, and lots of reunions with old friends and colleagues. At the end of each day, I couldn’t wait to crash into bed. But with all the warmth and inspiration I was feeling from the festival experience, I didn’t want to leave Philadelphia and return home to Georgia once Monday arrived.

The Seeds We Carry is my first short film and first film to ever screen at a festival. As you can see in the video of me accepting the award at the Director Lunch, I was not expecting the film to win any awards. Screening at BlackStar was already a dream come true. I could not be happier with how BlackStar 2026 turned out, and I look forward to sharing the film with many more audiences over the next year.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible participants, creative and skilled crew members, and everyone who has been rooting for us along the way, providing moral, financial, and material support. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!

ABOUT THE DOC

A short documentary weaving intimate portraits of community farm stewards in Southwest Philadelphia. Through the rhythms of planting, cooking, and sharing food, the protagonists reveal how everyday acts of care and resistance nurture belonging, foster cross-cultural kinship, and preserve a sense of home amid the pressures of gentrification and displacement.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Gabrielle Patterson is an interdisciplinary artist based in Atlanta and Philadelphia, working across animation, film, illustration, and installation. Through her work, Gabrielle seeks to tell immersive stories rooted in resistance, community, and collaboration. Her latest work, a short documentary entitled *The Seeds We Carry*, is a short documentary that weaves intimate portraits of community farm stewards in Southwest Philadelphia as they share stories of food, home, and belonging. The film premiered at BlackStar Film Festival in Philadelphia in August 2026.

As an animator and illustrator, Gabrielle has had the privilege of working with a diverse array of clients, including Ocean Conservancy, Mattel, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and ArtPhilly. Gabrielle holds a B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania. In her spare time, you can find Gabrielle gardening, indoor climbing, or attending a local art or film event.

In just 24 hours, The Seeds We Carry will have its world premiere at BlackStar Film Festival! As director of the project it’s safe to say that I’m nervous to share this project that’s been so close to my heart for the past 2+ years. But I’m also so excited and proud that the film gets to make its debut at BlackStar in Philadelphia. This is my first short film and my first time screening at a festival!

I can’t wait to see all of the cast and crew and so many friends, family, and supporters at the screening! This is a time for us all to recognize each other’s contributions and celebrate what we’ve been able to create together.

The Seeds We Carry highlights the stories of local Philadelphians who use gardening and cooking as methods of community and ancestral connection. And the community farm where they dedicate their time (@reinhardstreet) is not only a place to grow plants, but a space of learning, creativity, cultural preservation, and community building.

As such, we hoped that the film would have the opportunity to premiere in Philadelphia, and specifically at BlackStar Film Festival, because the festival celebrates the wealth of visual and storytelling traditions of the global majority, showcasing films by Black, Brown, and Indigenous people from around the world.

MANY, MANY THANKS to everyone who has contributed to this film – the participants who shared their stories, the crew, and all who have supported the project in one way or another. Hi there! My name is Gabrielle Patterson, and I am excited to share a project that I've been developing over the past two years. The Seeds We Carry is a short documentary weaving intimate portraits of community farm stewards in Southwest Philadelphia. Through the rhythms of planting, cooking, and sharing food, the protagonists reveal how everyday acts of care and resistance nurture belonging, forge cross-cultural kinship, and preserve a sense of home amid the pressures of displacement in a rapidly changing city.

Often in life things tend to come together at the same point in time, so was the case last month for SIFTer Gabrielle Patterson @gab.animates

She taught our EXPLORING MOTION GRAPHICS WORKSHOP back to back of her short #documentary Rough Cut Screening - THE SEEDS WE CARRY.

She was also featured as a @leewayfound Artist-in-Residence.

We are just a week and a half away from our Harvest Dinner! Get ready for an evening full of joy, incredible food, and engaging conversation.
