Join us in congratulating ALMAAHH’s Director of Operations and Programs, Gabriela Magaña (@gabbsml ), on receiving an official Resolution from Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia ( @adriangarciahtx ) ! 👏✨

This recognition highlights Gabby’s impactful work as an artist, curator, and leader continuously bringing Latino artistic expression to the forefront of our community.

In her own words: "Community work is not something any one person does alone." Gabby’s commitment to creating space for artists, building bridges across institutions, and serving Houston inspires our entire team daily.

Thank you, Gabby, for your unwavering dedication to making sure people and ideas are seen and heard. We are so proud to celebrate this moment with you (and give a special shoutout to your friends and cats, too)! 🥂✨🐈

On Sept 22 I received a Resolution from Harris County Precinct 2, Adrian García: WHEREAS, artist, curator, and local arts leader Gabriela Magaña brings Latino artistic expression to the forefront of the community through multiple influential roles.

Extremely grateful to @elfia5 for the nomination! So grateful for your friendship and support always💕

“I have learned that community work is not something any one person does alone. The recognition I receive today is connected to the artists, cultural workers, organizers, mentors, colleagues, and friends who have trusted me, challenged me, and allowed me to be part of their work.

My commitment has always been to help create space for people and ideas to be seen and heard, and to build bridges between communities, artists, and institutions.

Houston has given me so much, and I feel a deep responsibility to give back to the communities that have shaped me.

Whether through arts, culture, or simply showing up and helping make something possible, I believe the work is about leaving our communities stronger, more connected, and with more opportunities than we had before.

So I accept this recognition with gratitude

Thank you to Harris County for recognizing this work and, more importantly, for recognizing the importance of community, culture, and the people who dedicate themselves to making this a more connected and vibrant place for all of us.”

Also, yay for my friends and cats!! 😅✨✨ by @gabbsml

As part of the annual almaahh day celebration, which included bringing creative/thinkers from out of town, I wanted to create an opportunity for exchange with local artists. This time, that turned into a series of studio visits where friends/partners from the cultural sector joined.
We were fortunate to visit Violette Bule, Venessa Monokian, Julia Barbosa Landois, and Nela Garzón.

Extremely grateful to the whole team who made ALMAAHH Day possible!

I had the honor to moderate a panel: From Trust to Transformation: Building the Future of US Latino Arts. I keep thinking about the ideas we talked about with @delilah.montoya , @hirugami and @sixto.wagan , who I am deeply grateful for.

We talked about the idea of ourselves as future ancestors, about mutual trust and support, the process of building something, and showing up for each other.

That is how I chose to operate and I am grateful I see it in people around me, who I am deeply grateful for. Pople who have made space for me, believed in me, showed up, challenged me, opened doors, and helped me see possibilities that I might not have seen on my own. @sixto.wagan and @elfia5 are two people I think about in particular, and I’m grateful to call them friends and colleagues.

THANK YOU to the @almaahhtx team who I worked with side by side to make it happen: Susana Rosas, @sofiasilueta @cynthiajamilethart
And THANK YOU to @fernando.j.m @anthony.zavala_ @erosalescastellanos Carlos Duarte, @selvafertil @elizabethsoba @goodspero Blue People Ceci and Caro, Taylor, La Guadalupana flower shop, Churrascos team, @yansaflute @nisabes @ye_torres and the @renegadecarnies @tenorjorge and the @segundobarriocc @educoresearch the JIB team. This was possible thanks to all of you!

Thank you to all my friends and family who were there to support @jblandois @minkstereo @ps_itsangela @belensinvida3 @srhimr @tyzabel Adri, @yeirybird @rosaanaorlando @gracelchx @ale.ragazza7 Caro, all the friends/partners who showed up, and sooo many others. Feeling deeply grateful for the community the AA25 HiC has provided—an opportunity to grow, learn and build together.

It has been an honor to get to know these artists beyond their work—to listen deeply, and to build relationships from a place of trust, care, and genuine connection.

I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of that process, and the most beautiful thing, is that when I encounter them in a different setting, the mutual understanding, and grace persists. That is very powerful and a breath of fresh air.

I am especially grateful to Sixto for believing in me and trusting me with this work. That trust (and responsibility) made so much possible.

I am also deeply appreciative of the thoughtful words so many of you shared with me about what it meant to have someone hold space for and with you. Those words will stay with me. They reminded me that it was not about having all the answers—it is about being present in the space, and also allowing for what organically needs to be held in that moment.

I was compared to a Sunshine Mimosa. 🌱 😭 After reading about it, I see it is: “A plant that is sensitive to touch, responsive to its surroundings, and creates conditions for connection and life around it.” 😭💕 such a beautiful metaphor, and how lucky to feel seen that way.

And to everyone who made this experience what it was: thank you ✨💕✨
It truly took all of us showing up fully.

I leave this part of the experience with a very full heart.

Meet the 16 Soñadores, artistas, and creative souls, selected by @gabbsml @rosaanaorlando @paintedbyrose__

Each name represents a way of remembering, dreaming, and carrying culture forward.Every submission brought a different relationship to heritage, and together they reminded us how many ways there are to carry where we come from.

There is a place in Perú called Quelccaya, which means "where the soul writes". Perhaps this is where the soul paints, "donde pinta el alma."

I’m so grateful to each artist who trusted us with their work and their story, and I can’t wait for Houston to experience what they’ve created.

🎨Exhibition on view from Sept 1-Oct 25th
📆Artist Reception on Sept 24th, 6pm
📍TMC Helix Park, 1886 Old Spanish Trail

On June 28, I reached out to @artleaguehouston to request their space and support in hosting an art fair to raise funds for victims of the earthquake that struck Venezuela on June 24.

Of course, they said yes.

From there, I contacted Beatriz Bellorín, Gabriela Magaña, Luisa Duarte, Rosa Ana Orlando, and Eleanora Rodriguez to join me in organizing the event. When we started preparing the call for artists, my dear friend Nicolás Gerardi texted me: “What do you need? Let’s make the website.” And I must say, I think the work he did on the website is incredible. ✨

Then, 110 artists showed up.

We gathered all the names—big names, new names, friends, artists we admired—but definitely not dropping names here, haha. What mattered was that everyone came together for the same reason: Venezuela.

On August 22, from 6 to 9 p.m., we sold around 113 artworks, zines, and artist publications.

And together, we raised:

$27,822 for our beloved people of Venezuela. 🇻🇪

And guess what? All the sales, donations, and bar contributions are available through the link in my bio. Transparency has been important to us from the start.

With these funds, we will support five different organizations working on the ground to help thousands of Venezuelans in need. There are still items available for purchase on the website, and you can continue to donate.

We will share updates very soon as the funds are distributed, and we will keep working.

To every artist who donated their work, and to everyone who came—whether you bought something or showed up to support us—thank you.

To my collaborators and organizers, to our host Art League Houston, and especially to the 110 artists who trusted us with their work: thank you for trusting me, for your generosity, and for your endless support.

We did this together. 🇻🇪❤️

P.S. More news about the 2 containers of medical equipment arriving very soon in Venezuela, thanks to the support of @medicalbridges and the extraordinary efforts of Sarah Fisher @sarahfisherportraits and Ken Fisher. ❤️
