Christiane F. is a 1981 West German biographical drama film directed by Uli Edel. It depicts the descent of Christiane Felscherinow, a 13-year-old coming of age in 1970s West Berlin.

Based on the 1978 non-fiction book Zoo Station: The Story of Christiane F., the film immediately acquired cult status and features David Bowie as both composer and as himself.

Shirley MacLaine in What a Way To Go! 🥀

Directed by J. Lee Thompson, the 60s black comedy film stars Shirley MacLaine, Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, Dean Martin, Gene Kelly, Bob Cummings and Dick Van Dyke.

Remembered till this day as a film with one of the most iconic costume designs in cinema history. It’s not only breathtaking but it’s an essential part of the movie.

Louisa (MacLaine) narrates her life story of how each of her four husbands were met with tragic deaths because of their ambition and drive for success.

Designed by Edith Head, the styling and costumes of Shirley MacLaine mirrors her life with each of those husbands. A simple first marriage with Dick Van Dyke, living with Paul Newman in an artistic and bohemean lifestyle in Paris, business man Robert Mitchum with a luxuriously Manhattan penthouse and a musical pink dream with Gene Kelly. All of those elements come through in Shirley’s looks.
Brilliant, fun, creative, innovative and a visual delight.

Moments of the everyday life in cinema. Suspiria is a 1977 Italian supernatural horror film directed by Dario Argento. The film stars Jessica Harper as an American ballet student who transfers to a prestigious European dance academy but realizes, after a series of murders, that the school is a front for something sinister.

inspired in part by the Technicolor grandeur of Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Argento wanted to achieve a palette rich with primary hues and deep blacks. “A horror film brings to the surface some of the ancestral fears that we hide deep inside us, and Suspiria would not have had the same cathartic function if I had utilized the fullness and consolatory sweetness of the full color spectrum. To immediately make Suspiria a total abstraction from what we call ‘everyday reality,’ I used the usually reassuring primary colors only in their purest essence, making them immediately, surprisingly violent and provocative.” said Tovoli.

Shirley MacLaine in a BILLY WILDER technicolor dream 🥀

Irma la Douce is a 1963 American romantic comedy film directed by Billy Wilder. It’s the second Wilder film to star Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, made only three years after THE APARTMENT.

When a recently fired policeman (Lemmon) falls in love with a French prostitute (MacLaine), he doesn’t want her to be with other men, so he creates an alter-ego in order to become her only customer.

Id recommend this classic for anyone who loves romantic comedies, the 60’s, the stunning vibrancy of technicolor films, Billy Wilder screenplays or just great old hollywood films in general. A visual delight with incredible styling and art direction and incredible performances from the MacLaine x Lemmon duo.

Copacabana Mon Amour — o transe psicodelico censurado na ditadura nos anos 70.

Dirigido e escrito por Rogério Sganzerla e estrelado por Helena Ignez, Lilian Lemmertz, Otoniel Serra e Paulo Villaça, COPACABANA MON AMOUR é um filme brasileiro de 1970 que segue Sônia Silk, uma prostituta que passa seus dias circulando por Copacabana, no Rio de Janeiro, mas sonha em ser cantora da Rádio Nacional. Ela é irmã de Vidimar, empregado apaixonado pelo patrão, o Dr. Grilo. Sônia Silk vê espíritos baixarem em seres e objetos e procura o pai-de-santo Joãozinho da Gomeia para livrá-la desta aflição.

Devido à censura, o filme não foi lançado comercialmente em 1970. Sua restauração ocorreu em 2015, e o relançamento ocorreu durante uma mostra em homenagem a Sganzerla, realizada no Museu da Imagem e do Som em São Paulo.

A trilha sonora foi feita por Gilberto Gil, durante seu exílio em Londres.

The Sixth Sense is a 1999 American psychological thriller film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The film stars Bruce Willis, Toni Collete, Olivia Williams, and Haley Joel Osment. It follows a child psychologist (Willis) who counsels a deeply troubled child (Osment) claiming to possess clairvoyant abilities.

The use of color is still one of my favorite aspects of the movie. RED is used vibrantly in many scenes symbolizing the intersection between the living and the dead. It never goes unoticed and it’s a beautiful and memorable example of how a film’s visual can also tell the story.

The Conformist is a 1970 political drama film written and directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, based on the 1951 novel by Alberto Moravia. It stars Jean-Louis Trintignant, Stefania Sandrelli, Enzo Tarascio, José Quaglio, Dominique Sanda and Pierre Clémenti. Set in 1930s Italy, The Conformist centers on a mid-level Fascist functionary (Trintignant) who is ordered to assassinate his former professor, an anti-Fascist dissident in Paris.

Not only one of the most visually striking films I’ve ever seen but also a brilliant study on how fascism relies on weak individuals who would do anything for the sense of belonging. Just as relevant today as it was in the 70’s.

Gomez and Morticia Addams — our most beloved goth pair 🥀

Anjelica Huston and Raúl Juliá bring the iconic couple to life in the supernatural dark comedy live-action classics The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993), based on the comic strip characters created by Charles Addams and directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, also starring Christopher Lloyd and Christina Ricci.

Morticia and Gomez are my favorite couple in fiction for multiple reasons: they are dark, spooky, macabre, but above all, their passion is endless. Their relationship is grounded in respect, total devotion, tango dances and public declarations of love.

‘’Despite their dark atmosphere, Morticia and Gomez model the epitome of romantic love… One would expect their dedication to wickedness to seep into their marriage as well, but funnily enough, they are one of the healthiest romantic couples in TV / Cinema history. Hello October 🎃 Celebrating the arrival of the Halloween season with an homage to WOMEN IN HORROR 🩸

Whether they are victims, villains, mothers, monsters, final girls, witches, femme fatales — women and the horror genre are my favorite combination.

The role of the female character in the genre is in constant evolution, always reflecting the time we live in and our material reality, but it has been essential to the horror world since its creation. I am passionate about how complex we are allowed to be, and how our struggles can be discussed within the medium: the challenges of motherhood can get bloody, freedom and liberation often come through supernatural powers, desire, repression, fears, madness, it’s all there.

Jeanne Moreau and the trumpet score of Miles Davis 🎼

Elevator to the Gallows is a 1958 French crime thriller film directed by Louis Malle in his directorial debut. The film stars Jeanne Moreau and Maurice Ronet as lovers whose murder plot starts to unravel after Ronet becomes trapped in an elevator.
Associated by some critics with film noir, the film is considered an important work in establishing the French New Wave and the New Modern Cinema.

What transformed this film into a classic wasn’t its story, but the sequences of Jeanne Moreau walking through the streets of Paris with a score by American musician Miles Davis, which was made in a way never done before. In the words of Stéphane Lerouge for a Cannes Classics interview, the score was not written: ‘’Davis only watched the film once or twice and took a few notes, then brought his musicians together. Three days later the recording session began. They improvised looking at the screen, based on sequences selected by Louis.’’

Elevator to the Gallows was the first original jazz soundtrack to be improvised based on a film’s images.

Holy Motors is a 2012 French surrealist fantasy drama film written and directed by Leos Carax and starring Denis Lavant and Édith Scob, with cameos from Eva Mendes, Kylie Minogue and Michel Piccoli. Lavant plays Mr. Oscar, a man who appears to have a job as an actor, as he is seen dressing up in different costumes and performing various roles in several locations around Paris over the course of a day, though no cameras or audiences are ever seen around him.

I am a big admirer of Leos Carax’s work with his 1991 masterpiece The Lovers on The Bridge being one of my all time favorites. Carax continues to be one of the most relevant and innovatives filmmakers of our time, always exploring new genres and narratives to tell creative and compelling stories.
