lost weekend x the lost weekend

the lost weekend (1945) won 3 oscars at the 1946 academy awards: best film, best actor (ray milland), and best director (william wyler).

the film is a character study following an alcoholic writer named don birnam (ray milland). based off the book by the same name, we see don go through the waves of addiction over four days. on the final day, after “going clean” and relapsing and spending a night in a sanatorium, don is certain his addiction is hopeless and aims to k!ll himself. he is interrupted by his girlfriend (jane wyman) who says she would rather him alive and drunk then dead and sober. the film, unlike the book, ends with don at his typewriter determined to beat his addiction.
