If your marketing reports are full of follower counts and traffic graphs, you might still have no idea whether any of it is working.

The metrics that actually tell you something: leads and enquiries, conversion rate, cost per acquisition, return on ad spend, and - for SEO - how many relevant searches you're visible for and whether that's improving.

A good agency sets up proper tracking from the start and reports on those, not just activity. If yours only ever shows you traffic, that's worth a conversation.

You've probably had two quotes for digital marketing that look nothing alike. That's not one of them trying it on - the cost genuinely depends on your channels, your competition, the state of your website, and whether you need ongoing work or a one-off job.

What's worth watching for isn't the number on the quote. It's the small print - long lock-in contracts, work quietly sent overseas, follower counts dressed up as results, and identical packages sold to every client regardless of what they actually need.

The better approach: pick the one goal that matters most to your business, then ask any agency what a realistic path to it looks like, and what it would cost. If they can't answer that plainly, that's useful information in itself.

Marketing packages range from modest monthly retainers to several times that for what looks like the same service. The difference usually comes down to scope - how many channels, how much content, how competitive your market is.

But price isn't the only thing to check. Watch for long lock-in contracts, agencies that lead with follower counts instead of enquiries, and identical packages sold to every client regardless of sector.

Ad spend should also be kept separate from the management fee you pay your agency - make sure you know which is which.

Most small business owners aren't short on marketing effort. They're short on direction.

Without a plan, spend scatters - a social post here, a paid ad there, a website that hasn't been touched in two years.

A simple plan fixes that. It needs a clear goal, a defined audience, an honest answer to why someone should choose you, the right channels, and a way to measure what's actually working - not follower counts.

Review it quarterly. A plan you're willing to update beats a polished one you never revisit.

Try this: search your own business name on Google.

Don't stop at your website. Check the directory listings, the old entry nobody's touched in years, the review site that still has your previous number.

Found something slightly off? A road name abbreviated differently, a phone number you retired two years ago? That's not harmless. To a search engine, or an AI system trying to work out who you actually are, inconsistent details can read as two separate businesses rather than one small mistake.

The fix isn't technical. Find every place you're listed, then make the name, address and phone number match exactly, everywhere. It's one of the few pieces of this work you can do yourself, for free, today.

If you'd rather hand over the hunting and fixing, that's the kind of groundwork we start with before anything else.

Every week there's a new AI tool promising to transform your marketing. Most of it doesn't fix the problem you actually have.

AI genuinely helps with repetitive, language-heavy tasks - first drafts, SEO research, email personalisation, ad copy variations, social scheduling. It's weak where you need local knowledge or judgement.

The biggest mistake isn't picking the wrong tool. It's treating AI as a strategy instead of an accelerator. It can't fix an unclear offer or a vague audience - it just builds on what's already working.

And AI content published without review can quietly hurt your search rankings.

You can have the right words on your website and still be easy to miss.

That's because search engines, and the AI tools now answering people's questions, don't just scan your page for keywords. They check whether your business is something they can verify - a real, named thing with an address, a trade, a reputation that checks out across the web.

Google calls the database behind this a Knowledge Graph. It's what powers those information panels next to search results, and it's built from entities - businesses, people, places - not from text matching.

If your business isn't clearly and consistently identified as one of those 'things', you're easier for an AI engine to skip when it decides who to recommend.

Worth a conversation if you want to know where your business stands on this.

Trying to keep up with Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and X all at once - and still not sure any of it's working?

That's the common mistake. Pick one or two platforms where your customers actually are, and do them properly.

Post useful content, not updates about your business. A steady two to four posts a week beats a flurry followed by silence. And measure enquiries and website traffic, not likes - followers don't pay wages.

If you've got organic content that's working, paid ads can amplify it. Without that, paid spend is just money out the door.

Ask most business owners which websites link to theirs, and you'll get a blank look. It's not something anyone checks day to day — until a broken backlink or a weak page title quietly costs you visibility you didn't know you had.

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free once you verify you own your site. It shows you who links to you, flags any of those links that have broken, and points out pages with missing or weak title tags and descriptions.

It won't give you full competitor research — that's the paid version. But for checking the health of your own site, it's hard to beat for free.

If you'd rather someone kept an eye on this for you, we're happy to talk it through.

You probably don't have a traffic problem. You might have a leads problem.

Most small businesses get this part wrong without realising it: getting found and getting enquiries are two different jobs. A site can rank well, look great, and still lose people the moment they land - because the phone number's hidden, the message is vague, or the form has twelve fields.

Fixing it isn't about spending more on ads. It's about visibility, credibility and clarity all working together - and most businesses are only missing one of the three.

Happy to talk through where yours might be leaking enquiries. Full guide - link in bio.

Quick one: if you've only ever set up Google Search Console, you're only seeing half the picture.

Bing Webmaster Tools does the same job for Bing - shows you what's being crawled, what's indexed, where the problems are. Most people skip it because Bing's reach feels small compared to Google.

But it also powers search inside Microsoft Edge, and feeds into some of the AI tools people now use instead of typing a search at all. If you've already verified your site with Google, adding Bing takes minutes - it reuses the same verification.

Not a big project. Just a gap worth closing.

If you want a hand making sense of what any of these tools are telling you, we're happy to talk it through.
