Let’s recap the highlights of our trip to UC Berkeley last Spring semester! 🐻💙💛

In partnership with the Pilipinx Academic Student Services (PASS) & their Youth Mentorship (YM) Program, our middle school students went to UC Berkeley as part of our annual Shadow Day. They learned about the campus, college student life, and the different pathways to higher education. They also participated in a STEM project facilitated by Pilipinx Association of Scientists, Architects, and Engineers (PASAE) where they were challenged to build the strongest bridge using popsicle sticks.

Happy Filipino American History Month! 🇵🇭🎉

Our students and families are starting off FAHM strong with performances at the Sun Sala celebration hosted by FMHI-SF and SOMA Pilipinas.

Our GB Dance Crew consisting of 3rd-8th grade students performed the traditional southern Philippine folk dance, Pangalay. Then, the Galing Nanays performed the traditional Philippine folk dance from Bulacan, Bulaklakan, followed by a modern dance to the song, “Oooh Lala Baby” by Baby Dolls. Huge shout out & thank you to our performers for working hard, rehearsing many nights to bring the community entertainment, culture, and good vibes! 🕺🎶

Come gather with us at the Sun Sala. ☀️ As we unveil Philippine Sun (13°N, 122°E), we’re celebrating with an evening of Filipino music, dance, and community featuring Galing Bata, Galing Nanays, Angalo, and DJ Breganza of Seafood City fame.

Join us on the dance floor, enjoy a first come, first served sampling of Filipino street food, and stay with us through sunset as the Philippine Sun illuminates in sync with sunrise in the archipelago. A new cultural marker for SOMA Pilipinas, shining across distance and connecting our diaspora to home.

The Sun Sala celebrations are supported by the Svane Family Foundation and are the first of two Sunset Sala activities in collaboration with the Filipino Mental Health Initiative.

MAHAL is electric ⚡️ One of our favorite community art projects hidden in plain sight — the ABAKADA utility boxes in SF’s Filipino Culutral District.

Since 2020, the full Filipino alphabet — all 20 letters — has been written into the streets of @somapilipinas . Each utility box carries two letters: the Tagalog word, its Baybayin script, and the Hinabi textile patterns of indigenous Filipino communities.

We went looking for all the boxes. Some we found. Some were blacked out. Some we couldn’t locate.

Highlights from Buong Loob’s 5th Annual Mentorship Boba Date with students of @galingbata afterschool program!

Through Buong Loob’s Airmail Project, our high school mentors write letters to their middle school mentees, offering words of advice and wisdom in navigating school, relationships and self-worth. 💜 Our annual Boba Date is the culminating project day where mentors and mentees get to meet in person! This year was special as we had former Galing Bata mentees serve as Buong Loob mentors for the first time.

It’s the LAST MONDAY IN MARCH, which means it’s the last day to support our March Non-Profit Monday partners! Dine in with us today and we will donate 10% to that location’s featured Non-Profit of the month.

🧡SF Laurel Village: Filipino Education Center Galing Bata
@galingbata provides Filipino Bilingual/Bicultural After School Programs & Summer Programs for youth in the SoMa district of San Francisco. They’ll be using the funds to support their program health with materials, supplies, and snacks for the kids they serve.

💛SF West Portal: Asian Women’s Shelter
The mission of @sf_aws is to eliminate domestic violence by promoting the social, political, and economic self-determination of women and all survivors of violence and oppression. They’ll be using the funds to provide direct emergency assistance to survivors of domestic violence to cover the costs of emergency food, shelter, clothes, and other basic necessities for survivors in their time of need.

💚Oakland Lakeshore: Elevate Tutoring
@elevatetutoring advances social justice provides training, work experience, career development, and scholarships to low-income, first-generation college students, who then provide high-quality STEM tutoring, mentorship, and growth mindset coaching to their younger K-12 peers. They’ll be using the donation this month to support their overall program health.
