Thousands of children, youth, young adults ages 5-24, and program staff across the City have taken part in this nationwide celebration of afterschool programs and the opportunities they provide to learn, connect, and grow. SOMA’s strong sense of community came through clearly at the District 6 Family Summit, along with the challenges families and young people experience in their daily lives. Participants spoke about the neighborhood’s cultural diversity, Filipino community and history, community organizations, and gathering spaces. Come gather with us at the Sun Sala. ☀️ As we unveil Philippine Sun (13°N, 122°E), we’re celebrating with an evening of Filipino music, dance, and community featuring Galing Bata, Galing Nanays, Angalo, and DJ Breganza of Seafood City fame. Join us on the dance floor, enjoy a first come, first served sampling of Filipino street food, and stay with us through sunset as the Philippine Sun illuminates in sync with sunrise in the archipelago. A new cultural marker for SOMA Pilipinas, shining across distance and connecting our diaspora to home. The Sun Sala celebrations are supported by the Svane Family Foundation and are the first of two Sunset Sala activities in collaboration with the Filipino Mental Health Initiative. Philippine Sun (13°N, 122°E) is funded by the California Arts Council, Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, Office of Economic Development, San Francisco Arts Commission, Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy, and Yerba Buena Partnership.

Our seventh annual Summer Giveback was another incredible reminder of what can happen when our community comes together to support local youth. Thanks to the support of our friends, partners, donors, and volunteers, we were able to provide 100 complete skateboards, 100 pairs of Vans shoes, and additional gear to youth throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. A huge thank you to All In SF for once again partnering with us to help make the Summer Giveback possible, and to Vans for generously providing 100 brand new pairs of shoes. We’d also like to thank our community partners and organizations who helped us make this year’s Giveback a success: Boys & Girls Club San Francisco Rec & Park Galing Bata Mission Learning Vocational Services Road Map To Peace All In SF Tailor Made SFUSD Filipino Mental Health Initiative Mission Merchants Association The City Eats The Assist Project A special thank you to Señor Sisig for providing food for all of our attendees and volunteers. Of course, none of this happens without the shops, brands, individuals, volunteers, and members of the skateboarding community who donate their time, money, products, and energy to this event year after year. Thank you to everyone who donated through DLX, SF Skate Club, and Atlas, and to everyone who spent their time helping us put boards together, organize gear, and get everything into the hands of kids. Seven years in, we’re incredibly grateful to see the Summer Giveback continue to grow. Thank you to everyone who helped make this year another one to remember.

MAHAL is electric ⚡️ One of our favorite community art projects hidden in plain sight — the ABAKADA utility boxes in SF’s Filipino Culutral District. Since 2020, the full Filipino alphabet — all 20 letters — has been written into the streets of @somapilipinas . Each utility box carries two letters: the Tagalog word, its Baybayin script, and the Hinabi textile patterns of indigenous Filipino communities. We went looking for all the boxes. Some we found. Some were blacked out. Some we couldn’t locate. Can you help us find the rest of the ABAKADA letter utility boxes? A decade ago, our community made history. In 2016, SOMA Pilipinas was officially recognized as San Francisco’s Filipino Cultural Heritage District after years of organizing, advocacy, and belief in what our community deserved. That victory continues to guide us. It reminds us that cultural preservation is not only about honoring the past. It is about protecting our place in the city, creating space for our stories, and making sure the next generation knows that we were here, we are here, and we are still building. As we celebrate DEKADA, we carry that first victory with pride, gratitude, and hope for what comes next. Help power the next decade of SOMA Pilipinas. Future Filipina/Filipino puppeteers? I can only hope!🤞Grateful to the Filipino afterschool program Galing Bata to have me lead puppetry classes these past few months! I worked with the awesome Galing Bata staff in their brand new building on Minna St. in SOMA Pilipinas. The final show was last Friday at the Children’s Creativity Museum. Really luved seeing a lot of young passionate artists creating their own puppets! Mabuhay!

Highlights from Buong Loob’s 5th Annual Mentorship Boba Date with students of @galingbata afterschool program! Through Buong Loob’s Airmail Project, our high school mentors write letters to their middle school mentees, offering words of advice and wisdom in navigating school, relationships and self-worth. 💜 Our annual Boba Date is the culminating project day where mentors and mentees get to meet in person! This year was special as we had former Galing Bata mentees serve as Buong Loob mentors for the first time.
